ATI 5970 makes an appearance!

The first pictures of the new 5970 have been posted online and while we already know the specifications unfortunately as Driverheaven is under NDA we can't release them. The card is 13.5 inches long and takes around 300w power, so time for a PSU upgrade for many people!

You can however see the information on the card over here (as well as some nice pictures, and we can't get blamed for it !

Dang, I was all excited when you first mentioned the 5970 and said that it was a dual CORE card.

I mean that rascal does look like a beast, but it's still just an X2 with a different name

If it was going to change at all it would have changed for the 5xxx series...but it didn't really so wasn't expecting much difference for this card. They will just put up with the usual complaints and wait until aftermarket companies get onto it.

Wow, that's a lengthy card! My case is largish (EATX compatible, 17.5" long without the front door bulge), but I'd have to remove the lower drive bay to fit this. Still, I'm pretty sure that it would fit, so if anyone is wondering whether they should buy me one, no need to hesitate.

So, that tiny fan is meant to cool two cores and [maybe, hopefully] 2GB of GDDR5 memory? That's a little ridiculous.. I wish I could design the cooling system for that card.. I think I could do a better job.

Yeah this is something we have discussed before, I think ATI/AMD had ordered a few billion of those red fans and they need to clear stock. Its annoying to see them constantly being used, as a larger more capable fan can effectively spin much slower and push just as much air.

its a shame when people invest in good quality chassis fans such as noctua to keep noise down and get great CFM and their graphics card basically needs taken apart with a third party cooler to do the job right.

Yeah, but people that are getting Noctua fans often also like PC hardware and they know the ins and outs. In most cases they know the way to get a new cooler installed.
Not that big problem. New cooler will also drive up the costs.

its not a big problem I agree. It would just be nice to see better reference cooling solutions - it wouldn't drive up costs very much at all, not in the massive bulk productions of either ATI or Nvidia. Maybe you are right however, perhaps the audience on DH expect more (and can mod easier) than the mass consumer.

Uhu, this while cooling from low-end cards is extremely well. Sparkle for example adds a quite huge passive cooling to a 9500GT. It's like 45 degrees Celcius @ load with a 50% overclock.

Maybe, but if it isn't neccesary they won't do it. The card works fine with this silly fan and the temperature of GPU's can go way up.

Uhu, now people have a choice and can mount their own coolers.

People want a good stock cooler? Some partners have them. Vapor-X serie from Sapphire for example or watercooled cards from Zotac/BFG. If you make a supreme stock cooler, then those aftermarket coolers wouldn't make a lot of sense.

People that do not wish to overclock should have to to have to decide between having a non burned graphics card or a hoover inside their PC.

If I turn the 4870X2 up to 100% it is like a jet engine. That is unacceptable. Even at about 60% which is the top I usually set it at to have a temp not high than 70ish, it is too loud.

It's like buying a $5000 PC and having a $70 PSU. It might work but it yells "bad decision".

This is a thread on a 5970, not a 9500GT. Most high end reference cooling solutions are rubbish. the 4870, 4870 X2 for instance. the little fan did NOT handle those cards unless you went into ear piercing mode. I had several of each and a few of them died - ATI were on forums saying "100c is perfectly fine, they are made to withstand that" - rubbish - PCBs when they reach a certain thermal temperature start to fail, over time. There were even threads on DH about how to fine tune the coolers. its up to ATi and Nvidia to sort out the reference coolers.

Who says it isn't necessary? You? I think it is, quite a few people do too. once again a lot of the cards dont work fine, If you look for 4870 X2 overheating issues for instance, quite a lot of them failed. A better fan/cooler would have helped this. the fact they are still using the same mickey mouse cooler just shows its cost cutting. I am not singling out ATI either, Nvidia have done it on some of their cards too. this isn't an attack on ATI. its just the same silly little fans being used from mid range to high end boards.


Uhu, what? People who are educated have a choice. Those who aren't stick with the crappy reference coolers. Its also expensive to buy a third party cooler and I don't think people should be forced to do it if they want good temperatures without having an apache in their case.

Thats not a 'reference' or stock 'cooler' thats Sapphire fixing ATI's dumb decisions. I wouldn't be surprised if some underhanded deal was made between ATI and these cooler makers such as arctic cooling before hand.

the card looks brilliant, but most ATI cards do look sexy. I would hate to see a repeat of the 4870 X2 all over again, the cooling solution was not good enough. mine died I got it RMA'd but I sold it to a friend, it was just too hot and raised my case temps and if I manually adjusted it it drove me nuts.

Its part of the reason I moved to a mid range card to get the noise down and not have to worry during games that the card was sitting at 98c (which 4870x2 did if I left it to run auto). I don't feel comfortable changing the coolers on cards either as it voids your warranty.

This cooler on this looks the same, or close as earlier models. Not good to see (anyone remember the leadtek cooling solutions? those rocked!)
