AMD next gen 'Manhattan' and 'Northern Islands' will be 32nm
Some slides have been leaked by Japanese webside ASCII.jp which show AMD's future hardware platforms - this is valuable insight into how 2010-2011 is going to shape up for AMD.
By all appearances these are official slides and it confirms that AMD are going to be launching two 32nm next generation graphics architectures in 2010 and 2011. It looks as if the desktop side of their platform is sticking with 40nm Evergreen throughout 2010 however. The new GPU parts launched are going to be 32nm Manhattan products which would be aimed at mobile platforms - perhaps an initial trial run before a desktop release. Manhattan is a discrete GPU solution for Nile and Danube notebook platforms in a pairing with Geneva dual core and Champlain quad core processors. Both of these platforms support DX 10.1 with the Rs880 Chipset (4000 series) and if you want to move to DX11 support then you would move to one of the three Manhattan GPUs, Broadway, Madison and Park. In 2011 AMD are due to release Northern Islands, their high profile next generation part which is apparently shipping with DX11.1 support. DX 11.1 is still a work in progress and is due to be released in late 2010 or early 2011 although date confirmations are, as expected, still based on rumour. Northern Island is due to be released in both AMD notebook and desktop platforms and is going to also be incorporated into the second gen Fusion processors. Fusion was based around the Bulldozer core for high end and Bobcat core for ultra low power CPU's however analysing the roadmaps it appears that a new step has been introduced. Mainstream Desktop (Lynx), Ultrathin and Mainstream Notebook (Sabine) - all based based on the 32nm Llano APU. Llano appears to be a hyrid of currently available STARS core (Agena/Deneb) and the Northern Islands GPU - but 32nm. Allan Campbell: Heaven Media |
