Apple kicks Intel Atom into touch with new update
Our insiders today told us that the forthcoming release of Apple's Snow Leopard operating system is set to disable support for Intels Atom processor.
Update 10.6.2 prevents Snow Leopard from running on any systems with an ATOM processor installed - we previously reported that Apple loathe Intel's low performance CPU and have dismissed any possibility of releasing a netbook with an Atom at the heart. Apple have been rumoured to say that they want the best experience for their customers and that the Atom doesn't deliver the goods. There is however a deeper issue at heart, it could actually be that Apple do not want end users to hack their operating system to run on low end netbooks - a growing community are supporting running OSX on netbooks as they say it runs extremely well, much better than any Windows OS. There are rumours that Apple are developing their own ARM based processor as well for an upcoming tablet release although we have yet to get any solid confirmation on this. It seems unlikely. Mac OSX 10.6.2 is due for release in the near future and Apple claim that over 150 components will be updated. Netbook hackers wishing to keep OSX however will need to stick with 10.6.1 for the forseeable future. Allan Campbell: Heaven Media |

Re: Apple kicks Intel Atom into touch with new update
I still don't see how Apple can continuously get away with these actions? Microsoft gets fined for abusing its monopoly by having Internet Explorer and Windows Media preinstalled on its OS but still allows you to use alternatives. Intel got taken to court because it abused its position and offered great deals to OEMs if they only purchased Intel stock yet Apple is getting away scot free for "bricking" iPhones that didn't use their exlusive call carriers, releases patches for its MP3 software that specifically blocks non-Apple hardware from sinking up and now they are putting code in their software to actively stop it working with a specific 3rd party product.

Re: Apple kicks Intel Atom into touch with new update
Maybe Intel should pull their processors for Apple systems then...
To be honest i think that's ridiculous, The only way Apple's actually going to stop people from installing OS X on non apple machines is to switch back to the PPC architecture. Somebody's gonna find a way to let 10.6.2 work with an Atom. Besides from what i've seen of the OSx86 project, Snow Leopard is far from popular anyway |

Re: Apple kicks Intel Atom into touch with new update
Well the whole point of getting the OSX to work on non apple machines right now is to trick the OS into thinking that its running on a Mac Book Pro or the like so I assume unless Apple does some interesting tampering there will still be people hacking into their stuff.
