Via Nano 3000 series CPU's set for release
VIA technologies have just released information on their newest CPU to target the thin and superportable notebook market - with their new Nano 3000 series processors.
There are six new processors entering into production in Q1 2010 and they apparently can support 1080p playback with really low power consumption. The Via Nano processor was first released in May of 2008 and although they were good on paper they fell somewhat to the wayside next to Intel's successful ATOM CPU. The Nano 3000 series however adds support for SSE4 instruction set and VIA's VT virtualisation technology. Their claims are 20 percent higher performance and and equal reduction in power consumption. They will ship in the Nano BGA2 package and are backwards compatible with older VIA sockets meaning it should be a relatively painless upgrade. Intel however have a new range of Atom CPU's on the horizon so the smaller company really have their hands full trying to get into this market. Code:

20 percent higher performance than their previous Via CPU? If that is the case, they will still fail unless they also reduce the price for the systems they will be in.
If you think (and it is true) that Atom on a netbook is slow, wait till you try one of the (previous now) Via CPU.

Isn't that the same company that produce VIA chipsets for the MB. If yes , hell I wouldn't touch it.

Re: Via Nano 3000 series CPU's set for release
So I guess the main question right now is where are devices right now that even use these VIA chips. I haven't really seen any of them. Kind of curious.

Re: Via Nano 3000 series CPU's set for release
C7 is really obsolete and I think that VIA made a strategic error when they sold them to netbook makers. It probably seemed like a last chance to get rid of them, but it also closed precious bit of market that (the original) Nano could have served much better, which probably hurt the company in the long run.
20% better performance at 20% lower power consumption seems nice, but it's hard to make any judgment before seeing it, as well as next generation Atoms, in action.
