Powercolor release passively cooled HD5750
Powercolor today introduces a passive cooling solution into the HD5700 family: SCS3 HD5750. The PowerColor SCS3 HD5750 features an effective passive cooling solution dissipating excessive heat with minimal noise. The copper base, which fully covers, the GPU through 4 copper heat pipes and 32 piece heat sink offers outstanding cooling performance in a quite setting.
While running passively, the PowerColor SCS3 HD5750 maintains the original specifications with core engine of 700MHz, 1150 MHz memory speed. This model takes advantage of the latest 40nm technology, providing better performance while using less power and offering an excellent balance between a superior gaming experience and power efficiency. “To meet the demands of every kind of customers, we always try hard to create some impressive product series to achieve the goal,” says Ted Chen, CEO of TUL Corporation. “With the PowerColor SCS3 HD5750, we’re offering a perfect balance of performance, price and superior noise suppression.” |

Re: Powercolor release passively cooled HD5750
Since it seems they discontinued the Sapphire Ultimate 4670 I've been waiting for an announcement like this just need to wait and see what the price is.
This coupled with a low power CPU and quality fan as well as a SSD drive and a fanless PSU and you should have the ultimate gaming HTPC. |

The heatsink looks like it means business and anyone worried about temperature may add a quiet fan to blow over the card. Usually, even a very slow and thus practically silent fan vastly improves thermal performance on passively cooled cards.

Also the 5750 is an upper mid-stream product so would be more inline with a 6600GT. |

Re: Powercolor release passively cooled HD5750
Well, the 6000 series was widely recognized as a huge success for Nvidia. I didn't own one so I don't know what kind of noise and heat it produced, but it was a good architecture and while the high end models came with dual-slot coolers, so did all the other high end cards since then. It should certainly not be confused with GeForce FX 5800, which came with a huge slab of copper and made an awful noise while at the same time ATI's R300 cards were cooled with a tiny piece of tin and ran circles around it in PS heavy games.
Anyway, as for the power consumption, 6800Ultra consumed less power than Radeon 5750 is rated for, although I don't know if we can make a straight comparison as only the losses inside a circuit are turned into heat and the two chips were made with very different processes. Also, the cooler technology has improved greatly so I'd guess that it would be safe for a case with good airflow (still, it would need to be a really quiet case with good ventilation, because a ton of fans roaring to create enough airflow would defeat the purpose for having a passively cooled card).

Re: Powercolor release passively cooled HD5750
Awesome! Now I just need a better HTPC case with more airflow to accommodate a passive cooling card.

Re: Powercolor release passively cooled HD5750
I think passively cooled gpus work well if you have a side case fan blowing across it. A 120mm side fan will definitely be quieter than the usual stock gpu coolers.

Re: Powercolor release passively cooled HD5750
this looks great... i will look into buying it if it's truly 149$
I have a PCI "exhaust" fan that sucks the air out of the video card and shoots it outside my computer and a 120mm side fan that blows on the card itself ... should be alright! |
