ATI head to 28nm process for GPU in 2010

We spoke with an industry insider today who told us that in late 2010 ATI appear to be heading to the 28nm process. It also appears that this chip will be a co developed product by both Globalfoundries & TSMC. Globalfoundries are set to have the 28nm process in bulk shipping mode around October 2010 and obviously due to their connections ATI will be the first to get them.

Obviously with TSMC still struggling with 40nm yields which is damaging ATI sales right now there are more important matters at hand, but 2010 looks to be shaping up to be a very interesting year already.

Man, I'm unsure about them moving already to a smaller architecture so soon. i think they should get the yields up and focus on making dual-core graphics solutions on a 40nm process. But hey what do i know!

Wait , Did they get enough of 40nm chips already ? Nothing arrived here ?

Re: ATI head to 28nm process for GPU in 2010

I remember reading that the shortage is expected to end at the end of this month. Hopefully that's true.

As for the 28nm process, that'd probably be the 5xx0 refresh. ATI is always first to a new process, and usually successfully, so I don't expect any problems.

Now if only AMD could bundle a small CPU on that die...

Uhu, that's one of their strong points the last couple of years.

Looking forward to it

Well if they can get the 5xxx series on over a 25% die shrink in a little over a year how about an update to the 790GX? If they get the new unannounced entry level model (they've always released those a few months after the upper mid level cards) onto an intergrated GPU then ATI would be far and away the best choice for entry level PCs and would go someway to gaining back market share.

I just realized that the manufacturing process has shrunk almost a hundred times since I was a kid and that makes me feel old.

If they go to 28 NM, their yields should improve because they can fit more chips on a wafer, in theory, and the heat requirements will be negated by the new chip.

the problem is TMSC, not AMD.

I wish AMD would have a better partnership with GLOFO but it seems their fabs are trying to distance themselves for the sake of more business.
