AMD HD5950 makes an appearance
AMD plan to make the 5970, a single PCB based card with a pair of the 5870 GPUS onboard. We look forward to seeing this monster and as soon as we have any information on the release date we will let you know.
Information has leaked this morning however that the 5950 is due for release in the near future with pictures being shown at Alienbabeltech.com. AMD are binning their "X2" naming conventions and the 5950 is basically two 5850 GPU's on one board. The card is said to measure 12 inches in length which makes it as long as the Radeon HD 5970 and has 1,440 processor cores. All the frequencies are yet unknown and the final card layout is also likely to change. Any takers? Allan Campbell: Heaven Media |

Re: AMD HD5950 makes an appearance
If it gets here before the next Nvidia card I might go for it. Though, I would guess this beast will cost more than the Nvidia's flagship next gen card.

Re: AMD HD5950 makes an appearance
Looks good, I might be swayed into considering it as long as it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to put into my system.

Re: AMD HD5950 makes an appearance
Im quite surprised it seems to not need 2x8 pin power connectors. im sure the dual 5870 version will mind you. wouldnt fancy trying to power two of those in CFX.

I kinda like the new cooling solution, but I'm still doubting it will be enough.

12 inches? That sure is long.
If I was buying a new card now I would wait for the 5970.

Re: AMD HD5950 makes an appearance
I think that I remember an earlier report about the card measuring 13,5 inches, so this almost sounds reasonable.
And now I have a PSU that could power it. ** It's going to be to expensive for me, but there's no harm in a bit of fantasy.

Re: AMD HD5950 makes an appearance
I don't like the naming structure as this will confuse people, especially the uninformed and will be to AMD's detriment.
The X2 naming was simple, effective and followed the CPU way of naming (2 cores = X2, 3 cores = X3) so you had consistency across the board. AMD has been using the second X as incremental power identifier for a while. Last generation you had the 43xx, 45xx, 46xx, 47xx and 48xx. Among the top end you had 47xx X2 and 48xx X2. While a 5850 X2 is more powerful than a 5850 will it be more powerful across the board than a 5870? The 59xx naming doesn't fit in with anything else and positions the cards awkwardley like Athlon 2's which are technically Phenoms but sit outside the Phenom "family". There was nothing wrong with the X2 name and was clearer than the new naming system.

Re: AMD HD5950 makes an appearance
There is also a mystery PCB floating around that is rumoured to be a 5850X2.
I really should get around to being a news hound like I was a few years ago.

Ahh, I had my "potential" names wrong. 5850X2 seems to tentatively equal the 5950 as you said.
