Also, Who's to say one of those 12 canceled games would not have been a smash hit, but it seems that EA is busy tarnishing their reputation to me, and blaming piracy for everything?

Well, if they're firing that many people, those games might get sabotaged by some of those people. Better to cancel them than to have disgruntled ex-employees screw with them somehow. I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if at least one of them don't try to do something to compromise the company in some way. How? I don't know, but you know, trade secrets and whatnot.
