I am glad, I hope I will buy a blu ray drive next year. I am waiting for the recorders to drop price.

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
I have just ordered Star Trek on Bluray to watch over the weekend and last week I watched Apocalypto.
People will tell you that upscaled DVD looks nearly as good as Bluray but watch the Priest's scene in Apocalypto and you will know then how that is bolls ![]() Had my BDRom drive for over a year now, bought it before the format war was won so took a chance and it cost me over a hundred notes. Well worth it though. I buy my Blurays then sell them on eBay. Sometimes I even make a slight profit on the sale but more usually it ends up costing me a couple of quid. |

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
I can see why they are becoming popular...
I just picked up a Sony BDP-S350 (1080P) Player last week for £150.. Reduced from £200 a couple of weeks ago.. Im yet to watch a film as yet but after running Gladiator for 4 minutes or so the clarity is superb.Especially on my Panasonic Viera TX-L37S10B tv. Now all is needed is for Blue Ray movie prices to drop... They are a little pricey,Average price is £15.. |

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
I believe this Holiday season will be recorded as the time when Blu-Ray finally goes big time. Even in Canada, where electronics are overpriced, the BD Players can be had for under $200 and that's before Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Boxing Day sale prices when the prices draw buyers who never considered getting a Blu-Ray player. Not to mention PS3's finally at a decent price and bundled with all sorts of bad ass games like MW2.
It's not just the falling Blu-ray player and disc prices, it's the HDTV's themselves which are finally going for cheap in places other than the United States. You can bet that sooner or later everyone who buys an HDTV will eventually get a Blu-Ray to go with it. In the past, consumers could be content to pay for HD programming but now they will want to experience movies like never before. In case you can't tell, I'm pretty excited about this... ![]() That said, Blu-ray disc prices are still pretty damn expensive in Canada. Whenever I look at amazon or US retailers they get amazing discounts on new movies but we're still at least a year or two away from that point in the wasteland known as Canada. Older movies are cheap at least; it's also a nice start to see some classic films bundled together for a low price.

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
I've been selling the lower end Samsung Blu-Ray player for awhile now @ 99USD.... 1080p with no frills...... all the features working and hd playback via digital, just nothing extra..
Now blu-ray themselves i've been purchasing through amazon for a year and a half now in bulk deal packages. Buying in twins and triple packs as well as picking and choosing getting Blu-Ray's for as low as $15 USD per. Shit i got a box set of Harry Potter collectors blu-ray pack for under $60 USD when they went on sale for more then 65% off. Be thrifty and on the ball, and you can get just about EVERY blu-ray movie you want, even the big ticket ones such as star trek, transformers, and so forth for under $25 USD which is cheaper then retail stores sell Standard Blu-ray movies.

Have you seen the 1080p trailer for Toy Story 3? AWESOME. It makes the previous two look like Steamboat Willie.

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
As much as i agree, If you look further into the future Blu Ray will become a standard format much like DVD-ROM and CD-ROM have.
Give it another 3 maybe 4 years i reckon You'll be able to pick a blu-ray disk for £15 in morissons and the players for next to nothing further into the future

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
I'm not so sure that recordable Blu-ray discs will ever become cheap like CD's and DVD-R's. The film industry is terrified of people making 1:1 copies of Blu-Ray discs. I don't know if this will slow the growth of the format but it can't help. The DVD format seemed to boom once recordable drives and media became affordable.

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
im the only one in my house that has a blu ray player (my ps3) and theres not a single HD unit in the house.
id like to pick up an hd monitor some day, but i know we wont have an hd tv in the house for years. our old 36" crt in the living room still works just fine, and my 15 year old 27" here in the basement works fine. between that and there being almost no hd tv over the air, theres no reason at all to move to hd for us. sure as hell not spending $100+ a month for cable that offers hd.

I don't need to own a bluray disc. Just got Star Trek BD from BASE.com for £16.99 and it will be on eBay by next week. I would be surprised if it doesn't fetch £15. Star Trek was a good movie by the way and I think I will get 'UP' for next week. |

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
My biggest complaint about BluRay is that there is no way to force a movie to fill the screen. We use Windows Media Center to watch movies with and PowerDVD for BluRay content. With a regular DVD, we have 4 zoom modes directly supported by Windows to force the movie to fill the screen on our 52" widescreen TV if it had borders, but with BluRay, if there are borders, there are borders and you can't get rid of them in any way I can see.
I didn't buy a Widescreen TV to still have blank borders, no matter how sharp the picture is otherwise. My brother and I have decided to just stick with DVD's for that reason. I HATE those damn borders. With all that space on BluRay disks, why couldn't there have been an option in the movie's option settings to fill the screen of a widescreen TV? Why do they think people want to see borders on their brand new widescreen TV? We bought a widescreen TV so we WOULDN'T have to see those lousy borders. Yes, it aggravates me quite a bit. For example, we bought Tranformers 2 on BluRay and of course there is borders on the screen. Oh, but during those fight scenes in the forest, it jumped to a full fill-the-screen widescreen mode and looked beautiful, then once the outdoor fight was over it jumped back to having borders when those scenes ended. WTF was that? That's insulting is what it is. They just proved right there they could have made it fill the screen. Why couldn't it do that for the whole movie? Then there was the time we saw King Kong in HD on TV and it filled the screen fine and looked great. But the BluRay disk we bought had those lame borders that we couldn't expand to fill the screen. Why? We use PowerDVD 10 for the BluRay support in our HTPC. Is there some other BluRay player software that WILL allow us to force BluRay movies to fill the screen? Because until we find software that will do that, we're gonna stick with our regular DVD's. They look good enough for us......especially when we can make them fill the whole screen. |

Re: Blu-ray growth set to continue
I remember when the price of DVD-Rom was sky high , now you can buy a new DVD-RW +light scribe for 20$ . It is a natural cycle for every technological achievements but maybe by the time Blu ray drives prices drop till it reaches a "fair" price they will have invented a Black ray or whatever and It will be "Overpriced" for us again.

Rayder, I don't have blu ray so I don't know, but have you tried VLC? You get two options, one for zoom and one for crop image, you can use to adjust the video to your liking.
