The stunning news has just reached us that several customers have reported that Apple have refused to repair computers saying that second hand smoke is a health hazard.

Yep I dislike smoking too, but I've repaired MANY smoke filled computers in my day.

What the hell? Unless people are using their macs as Ash Trays i seriously doubt the presence of nicotine would be anywhere near harmful. And besides the point, It's not nicotine that's harmful it's the carcinogens produced by the chemical reaction made when the tobacco burns.

Just for the record, i smoke myself but i go outside.

wow, that's such BS. What about all of the stuff the computer is made out of, that's worse than any smoke residue. What about plain old dust? Apple needs to make their employees wear masks if they are so worried about it, not refuse to touch the pc. This is PC (political correctness) gone haywire.

I think its ironic..
if they banned cigarettes people would smoke banana leaves or dog excrement if they thought it would give them the same rush as tobacco.
No....it couldnt have happened to a more overpriced phone and in the strangest industry.
I wonder how the Droid would standup under continued exposure to tar and nicotine.
People have to have their habits and vices so I am not surprised.

I get sick when working on a computer that comes from someone who is a heavy smoker. I'll either get serious sinus problems, constantly coughing, or I'll be itching for hours. I'll work on any computer out there, but as soon as one of those computers comes into the store I get sick the instant I boot it up.

Computers owned by smokers are one thing, but ones owned by heavy/chain smokers, or ones from people that have been neglected (ie. never cleaned of dust)... those are some of the most disgusting computers you will ever see. The crap that piles up inside those things.. disgusting. Think of your cigarette filter times 1000. That, to me, is what Apple is refusing to work on, and I agree with them. Take a look at the following pictures, and you tell me if you would work on a computer that looks like this, breathing in the crap that these computers are spewing into your air. Ash trays are cleaner when you compare them against computers like these. And the smell.. holy crap...

I agree with you Tipstaff I would also not want to work on a computer that is that dirty and if those customers computers where that dirty then so be it, but otherwise Apple should have at least tried to fix their (the customers) PC's and jut told them it was not possible instead of just refusing .

Part of working on/ fixing PCs is dealing with and cleaning out dust though. Half the time that is the only problem with an overheating or otherwise malfunctioning PC. If you can't deal with that you shouldn't be in the computer repair business. I can't count the times I've cleaned the dust out of someone's "broken" PC, and that was all it needed.

Take it outside with a dust mask and a couple bottles of canned air- sometimes those are the easiest ones to "fix".

Machines filled with dust drive my sinuses crazy but unfortunately it's part of the job. I'm allergic to cat hair and for some reason every time i get a system to look at it's belonged to a house with a cat in it (i swear people are trying to kill me ) which sets me off.

Just do what i do, pull your shirt up over your nose, take a deep breath and dive in. And open a window/turn on a desk fan/burn some incense

first off,

Working on any comptuer with just dust or other naturally occuring debris is a typical matter, and nowhere near as hazardous as working on a machine that has been smoked around. And when you get to heavy smokers, it's like opening pandoras box.

I'm highly tolerant of working on such machines, quite often they are most of my business simply due to people that smoke around machines actually causing more damage to them.

The garbage that builds up on them actually can cause shorts and other contact related issues, cause fans to fail sooner then they should and just cause outright havoc.

I've had 2 such machines where the smokers smoked around them so often that the crap inside actually started running down the length of the board and pooled on various components at which point caused the machine to fry in a few places.

All the machines i've built i've warned the purchasers that smoke that i do not warranty any products that are smoked around. If they want to keep smoking that's fine, but it's their choice and unfortuneately i'm not responcible for the damage they do to their machines over time.

Gah i absalutely hate working on those computers cause you can get the smell off your skin or out of your nose for what seems like weeks, and I to get quite ill for awhile.

I'm sure thousands of other people would agree that they wouldn't want to touch anything lined with arsnic and other highly dangerous chemical compounds, let alone take the chance breathing it in. They've be better off sucking in the smoke from a flaming Flourecent Ballist.
