ati radeon 9700 widescreen panning problem

i have Mobility Radeon 9700 128MB on WinXP Pro and installation with the tool worked great!
however, on my 24" dell lcd i would get into panning mode when i enter 1920 x 1200 resolution (native for the lcd). everything is also stretched horizontally.
i had the omega drivers, switched to ati catalyst w/ Modifier tools...same problem. any suggestions would be appreciated!
