x1600 modder problem...

I too was craving a more efficient driver, so i tried using the mobilitymodder (following all the instructions, like UAC and msxml) but to no avail, i had this little problem:

i modded the 7.4 drivers, from both driverheaven and from ati.com . Problem is, when i execute the installer, it tries to install the 7.2 (my current version) driver and catalyst.

I hope this is a slightly more common problem...

did you select the right directory so not just ati\support but also like ati\support\7-4.....

Can you see if the inf file in the new driver dir was modded?

As Spike says it sounds to me like you are going into the wrong folder - it is easily to confuse this.

Firstly download Catalyst 7.4 and bin everything you have in the ATI support folder on your hard drive. go to install the Catalyst 7.4 as it says in the guide, then cancel out. This way you will only have one driver in the ATI support folder when you come to mod and install it.

Also you cant host a picture you have on your home machine Dorian you are trying to link to a picture on :C drive on your pc. you can use a free host like

aha, the bin everything in the support folder is the one step i skipped. That would kinda make sense, as that was that 7.2 driver which it kept talking about. Ill try it right now.

same problem, but heres an interesting tidbit of info:

I uninstalled the ati drivers, so it went back to WDDM drivers. Then i tried to install the modded 7.4 driver manually through device manager, but it said the current one was up to date!? Then i tried manually installing the 7.2 driver, and it went ahaid and installed...

I also have the exact same problems with the 7.3 drivers

Could it have something to do with the fact that my x1600 is hypermemory?
