Vaio S360P External LCD Problems

We got a LG 22'' widescreen LCD (L226WTQFB) for my advisor to use as an external display off of his laptop. The laptop is a Sony Vaio S360P with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 video card running Windows XP Pro.

This is a work computer, so he isn't doing any gaming on the thing.

I used the mod tool, and finally got the option to set the resolution to 1680x1050. I used V4 of the tool and 7.4 from ATI's drivers list.

I had to use the DVI-D connection, because all of the text on the screen had a light shadow of the text behind the text when using the analog connection. It made the text look blurry.

The problem now is that the fonts were hard to see, so I switched the Effects to ClearType smoothing. The fonts are easy to see, but some text is black and some is green. It is completely random which letters are black and which are green.

What can I do to fix this?
