Issues w/ ModTool

There's a thread you've never seen.

Laptop: Acer Travelmate 8215
GFX: Mobility X1600
OS: Vista

Question: Is the (modified) driver supposed to be installed cleanly or as an upgrade?

Follow up question: How do you stop Windows from installing a new driver on its own, when you uninstall a driver?

Another question: How do you uinstall a driver completely (except for using DriverCleaner, naturally)?

At my first attempt installing the modified driver - after having (tried to?) uninstall(ed) the previous Acer driver - it seemed to run smoothly (except that I chose not to install Steam) - but after having installed it, it didn't seem to be installed - at least properly. I checked the driver settings under Display Settings->Advanced Settings->Properties->Driver, and it showed that the previous driver seemed to still be in effect. If the cancellation of Steam caused an ineffective driver installation, I don't know.

I gave it another shot after having cleared out the remains of the previews driver (I think?) but this time it gave me some hellish error regarding lacking packaged-whatchamathings and something about not being able to detect a graphics card.

If I go ahead and execute the setup after the laptop manufacturer (Acer) has been installed, it doesn't seem to have any quarrel, but I haven't chosen to complete the installation as of yet, since I don't want an Acer driver overlapping with the ATi one, in case that would be a bad thing.

A lot of question - besides the three starter ones - but I'm looking forward to finally being able to play games like Battlefield 2, which the previous driver from Acer wouldn't grant me the pleasure of.

Best is to install the new driver clean. What you can do is uninstall the current driver in the device manager and then also selecting to remove the driver, that should prevent that from installing again.

I don't know about steam, but it has nothing to do with the driver.

So best is to uninstall the driver through the device manager, then reboot and then install the new modded driver.

There is no driver elsewhere on the disc that gets installed by Windows - it "just does". I've fresh-formatted the drive a few months ago so I can't see how the manufacturer could have managed to slip on a driver.

When I uninstall the driver and reboot, Windows automatically uninstalled the old driver, and I have no chance of cancelling i - with there being no cancel feature.

So I guess, I have to disable the automatic driver installation somehow?

Not to bump, but a new issue has arisen - although I'd still like if someone had an answer to the previous one.

When I install the modified ATi driver, my screen turns into a greyish/light-brown-ish teint, sort of as if it had a lot of dust on it. I don't really know what the issue is or how to calibrate it away.

Any suggestions or previous experiences with this?
