Uninstall Catalyst Mobility before using standard drivers?

I plan to install the latest Catalyst drivers on my new laptop. Having read the instructions on the modtool page, it's not clear as to whether you are supposed to first uninstall the Catalyst Mobility drivers that came with the system (via ATI Catalyst Install Manager in Uninstall a program). My instinct would be to go ahead with this, except the official ATI site doesn't appear to offer Catalyst Mobility as a download, so if I uninstall that and the standard Catalyst installation failed, it could be trouble.

Anyone able to advise?

Hi there!

Yes you should uninstall the old drivers after you have modded the the new drivers. You might need to reboot the laptop after the driver uninstallation.

The uninstall of Catalyst Mobility doesn't appear to have worked (Vista reported the uninstaller had crashed when I first started it up, but the wizard displayed anyway, so I assumed everything might be OK - probably a mistake). The next time I booted up, there were lots of glitches with the display (sidebar didn't display properly, items in folder views such as Computer and Network weren't visible, menus didn't fade in/out properly), so I rebooted again. Now I see the ATI icon in the taskbar again, and Device Manager reports the graphics card is still running with the original driver. But there's no longer an entry under Uninstall a program to retry the uninstall.

What needs to be done?

Did you install the modded driver? You should do that then...

Forgot to mention - when I run setup.exe (modded), Vista reports "CATALYST Install Manager has stopped working". Possibly to do with the existing drivers being there?

You have Vista that is fully updated etc... I mean the installer should work anyway ...

Yes, Vista is fully updated. I get that same error even when running the unmodded installer. Just to clarify, the installer file I downloaded is 8-7_vista32_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_65998.exe, 39.3 MB in size.

Although I assume it might still possible to uninstall Catalyst Mobility by manually running whatever exe/command the entry in Uninstall a program pointed to before it disappeared, I'm apprehensive about doing this since I can't know for sure the new installer will work once the original drivers are removed. What would you say?

That is the correct file now you have done the steps 4 to 6?

Yes, the problem occurs on step 6, it seems. I get the "CATALYST Install Manager has stopped working" message when I click the Install button in the setup.exe wizard. This happens both when the driver files are modded, and when they are not. My antivirus/firewall is also turned off at the time. Are there any details of my system configuration that could be causing this?

Hmm... that sounds like the installer itself is some how broken or there is some issues with the windows installer... I really can't tell whats the issue in here is...

Googling for the issue (there aren't many results admittedly...) leads me to conclude it's probably the installer, or just Vista. I guess it's lucky that the issue preventing me from installing the new drivers may have caused the uninstaller for the original drivers to fail, thus I can still use my card.

OK, I don't hold out much hope for this, I may just install XP instead.

Thanks for all your help!
