Mobility x1400 "suddenly" stops working with drivers?
So, yesterday while watching a video, my Dell Inspiron e1505 had some video card troubles. I downloaded the latest Catalyst Drivers (8.10) and used MM.NET on them and successfully installed. I figured everything was good so I shut down.
Well, today at work my video is working fine for about 15 minutes and then I get a black screen with only the mouse cursor on it for about 5-10 seconds and then Windows Vista 32 comes back with a message saying: "Display Driver R300 has stopped responding and has recovered successfully." Everything would continue to work fine anywhere from 30s-10m before it would happen again; but it became more and more frequent. Finally, I uninstalled 8.10, booted to safe mode used a driver cleaner to clear out all ATI drivers, rebooted and freshly downloaded and installed modded 8.9 drivers. From there the problems just got worse. I would have the same issue along with BSODs and weird graphical glitches. I tried Cat 8.10, 8.9, 8.8, 8.5 and even Windows' default X1400 driver (newest one being from 10/24/08, oldest one from 2006). All had the same issues and I tried them each multiple times. I noticed the problem never seemed to occur in safe mode, so it definitely seems like a driver issue; I also just downloaded Dell's latest Cat drivers (5/2007) and they *appear* to be working fine; i have been running a GPU stress test for the past 30 minutes without issue. So, based on the above, a few questions: 1) Is there a reason why Dell's drivers would work but Vista's and modded ATI drivers won't? 2) The blue screen I got was related to the Video Scheduler, but it was displayed too quickly for me to read. I have read up some on the VS but I haven't found anyone with my exact issues. 3) Could this be a hardware fault? While it does seem to work with Dell's drivers (so far...only about 45m total) and the standard VGA driver, it seems odd that the same drivers that have always worked for me no longer work! My warranty is up in about 12 days...do I need to call Dell for a replacement? Also, it might be worth noting this is a fresh install of Vista 32 as of 2.5 weeks ago. Was running modded Cat 8.9 fine until yesterday... Last edited by brazzle; Oct 30, 2008 at 12:44 AM. |
