CCC 8.12 doesn't run

My laptop is Acer 4920G, Vista Home Premium SP1, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2400 XT.

The previous driver is dated March 12,2008, and the bundled CCC with my laptop is CCC-basic or something like that. A windows update updated the driver to 8.57 (dated Dec 09, 08) but upon rebooting, CCC runtime reported it couldn't run on the 8.57 driver.

I googled and found this site, followed the instructions to mod and had the supposedly latest driver 8.56 (dated Dec 01, 08) and CCC (d/led from ATI) installed. Problem is, I can't get CCC to run at all. It's running as a process but there's no application window of CCC.

Rolled back the driver to 8.57, no go at CCC as well. Any ideas? I removed the bundled CCC-basic before mod-ding, and it was reported in setup as not installed. Should I uninstall the driver and everything, clean registry as much as I could, and retry?

I've just restored my computer to a previous point, driver is 8.47, CCC-basic running well. Back to basics then.
