horizontal expansion on widescreen laptop LCD (mobility modder)
Hello all,
I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, with an ATI Mobility Radeon X300 chip for graphics. The last driver Dell provided for this model is from 2005! And that driver has some known bugs that cause problems for me. A few months ago I stumbled on Mobility Modder and used it to modify the then-current Catalyst drivers (I don't remember which version, unfortunately.) This was a great improvement because it fixed the bugs I was having problems with. There was one problem with the driver set I used though - apps were claiming my video card doesn't support overlay which was impacting video playback perfmrnace. I never really worked on the problem however, because I don't do video too often Well last night it came time to reinstall (problems with booting) so after backing up all my data I decided to do MM on the latest Catalyst 9.1 drivers. Afte rreinstalling, the drivers worked perfectly fine, except that my LCD no longer horizontally stretches the image to fill the screen when I am in a resolution lower than native. For example, if I play a game, or run a video, at 800x600 resolution, there are two black bars on both sides of the image. The Catalyst drivers I modded before that exhibited the overlay problem (unfortunately I can't remember which version) did not present this problem - horizontal expansion worked properly. I tried a few older versions of Catalyst (modding them) but I did not get any improvement. I am going to do another reinstall because I forgot to include some tools on my XP CD (nlite). Note that overall screen expansion works fine. The panel is 1680x1050, but if I run 800x600 it does stretch it to fill the panel, it just won't stretch it (changing the aspect ratio) of the image to fill the entire panel. To me the black bars are annoying and I want the horizontal expansion and don't care much about the aspect ratio issue. Does anyone know what is going on and how I can fix it? I used the latest MM from the website (1.1.1.0?) and the latest Catalyst drivers from ATI.com. As I said, my XP install is nlited, but I didn't remove anything that's obviously related to display. Thank you, FM |

in the catalyst control center, open up advanced view and select the MONITOR then going into it's attributes..
from there select the type of scaling you want to do, be it center (which put black borders around a smaller image but it's 1:1 ratio giving you good quality).... maintain aspect ratio which will enlarge it to the largest it can while maintaining it's heigth/width .. leaving black bars on the sides.... or stretch to full size.. which it sounds like you want to do...

Hail to you chief, everything runs great and my last quirk for mobility modifier is resolved. Thanks again mate. PS. Just on a side note, when I modded the drivers, the desktop version (which you guys suggest to use) gave me instability and crashes, but when I use the mobility version everything is fine. Any ideas cheers |

due to the creator of the laptop not following referrence design.. you end up with results like that...
