Destop version of CCC doesn't work...but mobility does??

Hello everyone, quick question... I have a x1700 and have tried to use the mobility modifer but everytime I follow your instructions to use the desktop copies of the ATI drivers my system becomes really unstable. As a last resort I tried the mobility versions of the drivers and hey presto no more insability and great performance! Just wondering why this is since getting the latest mobility drivers are hard since I can't pass the ATI varification and have to find the download somewhere else.
