ATI x1600 Mobile in Windows 7 64bit...NEED HELP

I'm running a MacBook Pro 1st generation (with an ATI Mobile 1600 graphics card) and of course no one supports this card. I installed Windows 7 beta 64 bit and the last driver to get working is the graphics card.

I installed BootCamp 64bit for Vista and everhting else is working. However, I've tried the modtools instrucitons to get the Vista 64bit x1600 desktop driver to work, but to no avail. I was wondering if anyone could help. I skipped the first step of installing MSXML 6.0 since it should already be with Windows 7 (i think). I then deactivaed UAC control with regedit, downloaded the x1600 driver from amd's site via support>graphics driver>windows vista>64-bit edition>radeon>radeon x1600 series. I tried both the display drivers only and the one with the catalyst control center integrated with it. When running modtools on either, I get a green check on all three steps, locate and install the setup.exe, reboot, but my windows 7 stll shows a standard driver with no real resolution options.

Please, I've been working on this for days, and this is my last issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think i resolved it. I was using the recent desktop catalyst 9.3 downloaded directly from ATI. I tried the 8.12 drivers from Driver Heaven Download site and it works. Moving IE windows around though the refresh rate isn't too good on the space the window just was. But at least I can get full resolution.

So far so good, so I think so. I'll be posting a How To on macrumors within a week. I'll post a link when I get to it, so subscribe to this thread to see when I do.

Re: ATI x1600 Mobile in Windows 7 64bit...NEED HELP

I can't seem to get the graphic card to work on my WIndows 7 (32 bit on Macbook pro first gen). I tried using the Boot Camp Installer, no luck. I also downloaded the 9.3 and 8.12 driver from ATI and still, no luck. What should I do next

Re: ATI x1600 Mobile in Windows 7 64bit...NEED HELP

Well you'll want to get a 64 bit BootCamp. You may already have your own copy of Leopard with 2.0 BootCamp, but you need one with 64 bit drivers. You can download them here but I only recommend doing it if you already have a legal copy of leopard. Then update to 2.1 via apple's site or the appleupdater you installed.

Make sure you follows the instructions on moding the drivers fully. I downloaded MSXML 6.0 and selected msxml6_x64.msi and got that to install the time that I attempted the 8.12 driver, so it may or may not be necessary. Then I disabled UAC with method #2, regedit. Then I was able to download ATI Catalyst 8.12 - Windows 64-bit from driverheaven's download list. Then use the modtool and point to ati/support/8-12_vista_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_72276/. Run it, then find the setup.exe under the Driver folder. I should note that after installing MSXML and disabling UAC and installing the ati drivers you should reboot each time.

And that's it, after all of that it worked.

Oh, I see you have a 32bit version. Not sure then.
