Repeated blue-screen crashes- Radeon 9700 on Vaio A270P

So- I'm using a Vaio A270P with a radeon mobility 9700.

I've had recurrent driver-related crashes while playing EVE online. The tech support recommended installing the 'latest catalyst driver'. I found that I couldn't do this... after searching online, the Mobility modder seemed to be the answer.

I went through the directions on http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php

The installation seemed to be successful, but now my computer won't re-start. I get the dreaded IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL blue screen, and a re-boot. Repeatedly.

I'd attach a DirectX diagnostic if I could... (but can't). Any suggestions?
