I have a question.

When I first used cab driver it worked fine and everything. Now if I try and use it in safe mode it doesn't work. I click clean and then like half a second later it comes back up. It doesn't say it has been cleaned or anything. Anyone else have this problem? Thanks.

You mean Cab Cleaner? You don't have to use it in safe mode. I think it should work in safe mode. Try if it works when you boot windows normally.

It said use in safe mode before you run driver cleaner. The first time I used it, it worked fine but now it doesn't work at all.

Thumbs Up! Kudos Spike!

You have got to be the hardest working utility tool maker out there, you're ALWAYS right on top of it whenever new drivers are released!

Thanks Spike, you've helped a LOT of people and I hope you continue to do so. Please keep up your fine work.

@Labula did you run cab cleaner 1.3? It is possible that because of the bug in it it deleted the cab file and didn't rebuild it. Maybe that is why Cab Cleaner 1.5 doesn't do anything. To restore the cab files:
Copy the driver.cab from the Windows XP cdrom. If you have Service Pack 1 installed than unzip the big update file with winzip to a temp folder and goto the dir new. Copy sp1.cab from that dir. You should copy both files to windows/driver cache/i386

I hope that i explained it ok.

Hey Spike, thanks for taking the time to create this program, It has been a huge time saver for me....

I ran into a small issue last night with the 1.8 version.... I was uninstalling the Via drivers and ran the cleaner afterwords.... The cleaner appeared to work as designed, but the new via drivers wouldn't install, coming up with the "16 bit application will not work under this operating system" or some such... I know that is a bit weak, but I didn't write it down word for word... anyways I figured I should reboot and try it in safe mode.... The system wouldn't boot into safe mode, nor windows, nor safemode with Cprompt... upon selecting any of these options, the system just rebooted itself again and again...

My question is what did I do wrong.... I'd like to avoid doing it again.... fortunately I use XP so I was able to run a repair on it and get it going again....

Thanks again for your time and effort... It is greatly appreciated....

You used the VIA cleaning ok. I will look into the cleaning file and see if i can find the problem. I think the cleaning file or leaves something which should be deleted that gives the problem or it deletes something that shouldn't.

Cab Cleaner is for XP and 2000. There is a driver cache folder with cab files. Cab files are like zip files with driver files in it. In windows in those cab files are drivers for ati and nvidia. Only those drivers are old. I made the cleaner, because i noticed 1 time that windows took old files from the cab files and overwrited my new files.

Ran into a couple of issues regarding nforce2 chipset (Abit NF-7 2.0 motherboard).

The first one is very very minor.
After unstalling all my Nvidia drivers (nforce2, display, and WDM) and running the cab and driver cleaner, I rebooted and found that my USB drivers were not installed, or rather, they had the yellow exclamation mark in the device manager. To install it, I just went into the device manager, chose the device, and manually installed each one. The drivers are there, you just have to choose them. I think this issue actually has more to do with SP1. The Abit motherboard instructions state to install SP1 before installing the nforce2 drivers in order to get USB 2.0 working correctly. It also states to go into the device manager and to do what I just mentioned.

The second issue is a bit more of a problem.
I had the latest nforce2 2.42 drivers installed (without the display drivers and without the problematic SW IDE drivers that nforce2 owners know about). But I also updated one part of the nforce2 drivers through Windows Update. Version 2942 of the nforce2 audio drivers were available a short time ago and were installed on top of the 2.42 package (which has 2937 audio drivers I believe). However, after installing all my nvidia drivers including all audio drivers, I can't get Windows Update to reinstall the 2942 drivers. The 2942 installation remains on the installation history page of Windows Update. Then, I tried looking for the driver using the Windows Update Catalog page so that I could download it as a file. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the newer driver though I did find older versions of it.

Since I have a backup of my OS partition, I tried the process again, changing the order in which I uninstalled all my nvidia drivers. I also tried installing the nforce2 drivers without the audio drivers portion present thinking that it might help when using Windows Update. But none my efforts worked.

If I'm correct, it seems that you can't get Windows Update to reinstall nforce2 driver updates (at least with audio) if you use Driver Cleaner after the update.

Has anyone ran into this problem and/or have a solution? I'm curious if VIA owners ran into similar issues. Perhaps there is some way to trick Windows Update into thinking that the update was never installed.

So if i read it good, than the cleaning is ok only that problem with the windows update? I can try to figure it out, but you need to send me you reg. Look here what i need. I will only looks for nvidia nforce related things and see if i can find if it is stored in the register.

Hey Spike,

I just fixed my own problem. Actually, it's more of a work around. I suppose the Windows Update issue still exists.

I searched around to see if anyone had a copy of the 2942 nforce2 audio drivers available for download since I couldn't find them on the Windows Update Catalog. Luckily, I found a link from one of the forums I read (I think it was either the nforcershq or the amdmb forums). Here's the link to the downloadable driver: http://doomiii.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/...2942_audio.cab

I suppose I could have just redone everything and installed the driver afterwards but I ended up doing something different. As you may know, the nforce2 drivers are released as a set of drivers with an install program and drivers for different devices located in several subdirectories. I first extracted the 2.42 nforce2 drivers to my hard drive. Then I deleted the contents of the "AudioDrv" subdirectory since those drivers are older than the ones made available on Windows Update. I took the downloaded 2942 drivers (see above) and extracted them into the empty "AudioDrv" subdirectory. I also deleted the "Display" subdirectory which had the older 43.51 nVidia Detonator drivers since I was going to install the newer 44.03 Detonator drivers afterwards.

Basically, I packaged my own custom nforce2 drivers which are up to date as far as I know. So I didn't have to update the audio drivers using Windows Update.

It seems to work well so far as I can tell but I haven't tried out everything yet.

Do you still want the registry entries? I kinda doubted that they would be useful at this point.

Alright it looks as if Driver Cleaner 1.8 isn't the reason why I can't use Windows Update to get back the newer nforce2 audio driver.

I restored an earlier backup of my Windows partition and reinstalled nforce2 2.42 drivers which overwrote the audio drivers I obtained through Windows Update. Then I tried using Windows Update to get the newer driver again but didn't use Driver Cleaner this time. I figured that if I was able to get the update, that would mean that Driver Cleaner somehow interfered with the update process that first time since I could get the update when I'm not using it. If I could not get the update, then I figured that Driver Cleaner probably has nothing to do with my not being able to get the updated driver from Windows Update. (I know it's kinda confusing. Sorry.)

Well, it turns out I couldn't get the update. So, I think the problem I ran into isn't related to Driver Cleaner.

Spike, I appreciate your hard wok on this program, but if you received my e-mail (sent off between multiple system restore points) you'll see there is a problem with the ATI cleaning part of Driver Cleaner.

For some reason after performing the ATI section of Driver Cleaner, Windows Media Player no longer functions. Not only that, but no program or game can play mp3's or movies whether they use WMP or not.

Through a very, very long proces of elimination (16 system restores, and further testing to replicate the problem) I have 100% accuracy in this situation. There's obviously something the ATI section removes that is vital for the playback of mp3 files.

* OS: Win XP Home SP1
* Directx 9.0A
* Processor: Athlon XP 2700+ (333 MHz bus)
* Motherboard: Asus A7N8X
* Bios Rev: Version 1004
* NForce II drivers: 2.1
* Memory: Corsair 1 Gig DDR 3500 CL2
* Timings: 6-2-2-2
* Video Card: ATI Radeon 9700 Pro Cat 3.5
* Sound Card: SB Audigy 2 (latest non-beta drivers)
* 3 IBM Hard Drives: ATA 100 - 80 Gig 7200 rpm
* Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2060u - 22”
* Pioneer DVD Drive

It's not just MP3s... It's ANY video/music file that won't play. AVIs, MPEG1, MPEG2s, MP3s, Divx... And they won't even play on Media Player 6.x (mplayer2.exe).

This is what I did to reproduce the problem:

* Uninstall MMC, DAO, DVD Player, Control Panel, Display Drivers.
* Boot Safe Mode
* Run Driver Cleaner for: ATI, ATI MMC, ATI WDM
* Reboot
* Tried opening ANY video files and won't work.

Good thing I hadn't disable system restore. Still, after a couple of hours I was back in business but used Driver Cleaner v1.5 (though I only used the ATI option - didn't use the ATI MMC just in case).

System is a P4 1.8, 512 MB, XP Pro SP1, AIW 8500 (128 Mb).

Spike, I e-mailed you all the info you should need. Also, I finally figured out it is the "ATI WDM" cleaner causing the problem, and not the "ATI" cleaner.
