Catalyst Control Center not starting (x1600)

So, I updated my driver to the ATI 9.7 driver because I heard 9.8 had some issues, did the usual thing of extracting the files, modifying them, then installing, and while it fixed some problems I'd been having (my screen was stuck upside down, then wasn't detecting the card at all and thus running on crummy resolution), but now I've got some new issues:

- Can't get to Acer 8200's standard resolution of 1680x1050
- Catalyst Control Center won't open
- Get the occasional message that I don't have a proper ATI driver

I tried reinstalling it, but this did no good. Can anyone help me out? Thanks.

Modifying them is not a usual thing. Do you have a laptop? If yes, I don't know.

I had a similar issue a couple of months back. I had to use the windows restore facility to go back to before everything was changed, then uninstall from safe mode, then reboot, then try again. Now using 9.7 and considering updating them.
