Win 7/nVidia 8600/Inspiron 8600

Upgraded (in place) from Vista SP2 to Windows 7 RTM on a Dell Inspiron 8600 with an nVidia GeForce 8600. W7 Setup installed the generic VGA driver. Vista supported native res of the display, IIRC at 32-bit, and I went with that. But, oddly, with W7, closest I get is 1600x1200x16bit. (Supposed to be 1600x14xx, 32-bit, IIRC.)

Mobility Modder allows the current nVidia drivers to install, and there are no reported errors when I do. But Windows is still using the Microsoft driver.

After install, I see this event in the System log:

Log Name: System
Source: Microsoft-Windows-UserPnp
Date: 9/12/2009 8:58:03 PM
Event ID: 20001
Task Category: (7005)
Level: Information
Keywords:
User: SYSTEM
Computer: <computername>
Description:
Driver Management concluded the process to install driver FileRepository\nv_disp.inf_x86_neutral_6ea8a8da32d ee717\nv_disp.inf for Device Instance ID PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0324&SUBSYS_019C1028&REV_A1\4&2B7 4EC9&0&0008 with the following status: 0xe000022d.

When I Google the error code, what I see is "The driver selected for this device does not support Windows XP." Absent information to the contrary, I'd guess that the same error code is used for W7, and really means "The driver...does not support whatever OS you're running." However, the nVidia 186.61 driver claims support for W7 x86.

Suggestions?

Got the same problem here. Apparently no solution. We will have to wait for the producer to release another driver.
