Driverheaven - Driver Cleaner 1.9
Here is another release of Driver Cleaner. Below you find a list of the things that are changed since 1.8:
Improved: - ATI cleaning file - ATI WDM cleaning file - VIA Chipset cleaning file alpha - nForce Chipset cleaning file alpha If you need to use the ATI WDM cleaning than download 1.9 IMPORTANT: uninstall the older version first before you install this version. It is for nVidia, ATI, Creative and VIA drivers. It will remove anything that is left by the drivers after uninstall. You can download the new version here. If you use Driver Cleaner either for personal or business use and wish to support development so i can continue to improve this product, please donate some money. Every little bit helps in my long hours of developing this tool to further aid the community. See the Driver Cleaner website for a link or check the readme or help file for more details. Spike

Problem with the nForce cleaner. It deletes the usbport.sys file which is required by Windows. I've had two computers now where I've had to send them this file from my own computer because it was deleted by DC.

About an hour ago I decided to install drivercleaner 1.9 . I noticed that there was a "via" option in there so I decided to clean up my via 686b southbridge drivers and reinstall them. I ran drivercleaner and chose via, then pressed clean.
An error message popped up telling me that important windows files had been overwritten. I didn't think much of it- I figured I would replace them when I reinstalled the IDE drivers. I rebooted (or tried to)- No go- Got blue screen of death with message that windows was shut down to prevent serious hardware damage, bla bla bla.... I didn't write down exact error message- I was too worried about recovering important data. Basically it said to check for errors, reinstall IDE drivers, remove and replace faulty IDE devices, remove Harddrives. I tried to let the Bios re- detect the harddrive, but that didn't help. I figured, OK, safemode then- Nothing- same thing. Since I wasn't running system restore, and never do, And have never needed to- except once when a third party theme error that made everything in windows balck- but I was able to recover from that. Anyways-- after Drivercleaner- I was hosed- No windows Xp for me anymore. I popped in a boot disk w/ fdisk and ran scandisk, nothing found- I had to run setup from my windows xp pro cd and repair the installation, It took about an hour, looking just like and installation after a format c:--- and to my surprise, after that, I booted into windows to my desktop, almost just like I left it- But I got about 15 errors right in a row stating windows has just recovered from a serious error- When I right click on my computer, I get all kinds of errors- I am back to pre-sp1 with no updates and all kinds of problems. I'm just glad that I got into my old windows installation to save some very important e-mail addresses and links that I hadn't saved yet. (widows makes it a pain to save individual outlook express identities and email addresses other that writing them all down) --- It will take a while, but I'm going to just write down all my email addresses and saved favorite links by hand. In the past I have used "files and settings transfer wizard" to save all my internet favorites and email settings to use in my next install- But with all the "path not found" errors I'm getting now- I'm not sure that will even work. Plus it only ever works for the main Identity in outlook express and I have 4- so three would get lost. Arg... Just a warning to everyone who thinks they might want to use the "via" chipset driver cleaner, make backups, prepare to reinstall you operating system. Turn on System restore before hand. I don't know what happened to me- but my OS is hosed- I know what I'm going to be doing for the next week. Be careful!! I was using windows XP pro SP1, Gigabyte ga-7dx+ w/ AMD761 northbridge and a Via 686B sonthbridge with drivers from gigabyte for the IDE and southbrdge and the latest AMD 761 AGP drivers (5.33 I think)for the northbridge. After using DH Drivercleaner for the via chipset drivers, I rebooted and did not have a working OS. Go figure.

I know about this problem and i removed the via cleaning file from my next release, so no more via cleaning. Nobody gave me help on the via cleaning file so i stop with the via cleaning file.

I found out about it 2 days ago and first wanted to look into it. Since yesterday i know it is not ok. I take it out of my next version. Also changing this version has no use, but i will remove it. I just hoped that people just helped me with the program like giving reg keys and such.

Now i need as much info as you can find about the via install on your pc like files with for example via*.* and in the registry search for VIA and export that and mail it to me.

I've already reinstalled windows- so after I update all the drivers, how would I go about going that search? And how exactly should I e-mail the results to you? I have an AMD nortbridge and a via southbridge.

Just use windows search and run regedit and search there. You can put it in a text file and mail that to me and for the registry you can right click on it and select export.
Also all cleaning files are made by me and help from some people so no manufacturer helped me. Most is my work.

I've had some problems with my screen going black after a while of playing, and the support persons say that there is a driver conflict, so I downloaded Detonator Destroyer, no go there, "Non NVIDIA drivers or non NVIDIA card". Then I tried Detonator RIP, and Nasty File Remover, did everything by the readme, but the problem was still there. Then I found Driver Cleaner, and thought that I should try it out. After doing it all like the readme sais, I can't install new drivers. The standard NVIDIA quick-install does not seem to do anything, the drivers are not initialized on startup. When in the "Add/Remove hardware" dialog, I try select "Videocontroller (VGA compatible)" from the list and it tells me that "This units drivers are not installed. (Code 28)". Then I try to install the drivers by selecting the "nv4_disp.inf" file, doing so, it tells me that "The INF-files format differs from what was expected" (that is translated from swedish
. Somewhere I also saw something about not having the information to start the graphics card in the registry. What is all this fuzz about? I have a GeForce FX 5600, The newest NVIDIA drivers and so on. |

I'm still not sure how to export the correct files-- I put in "*.*via" (w/o quotes) in the find box in regedit, but it searched through the registry and didn't show me the results, I would send youmy entire registry, but it's 33 mb.

ampleyfly are you trying to insyall 45.23 or 24? If so try to install 44.90 and see if that works. I am still looking what nVidia changed in the install.
BWX232 i will ask for it later, because i am first looking into the via installer, they use some different way and if you would uninstall it and than clean it than windows becomes unusable, really wierd.

I had a serious error after using DC 1.9. I had tried the Omega Dets, didn't like it so I reinstalled Nvidia 45.23. Then I read where 40.41 or 30.30 were best for GF3 so I was going to put them on. I uninstalled the 45.23, reboot, and run DC, then run the 40.41 installer which runs fine and says installed. Reboot and there's no more video card in my Device manager! Can't uninstall or update driver! I try the add hardware routine and finally see the GF3 card, but it has an exclamation mark. When I click on it it says WinXP can't start this device as there's a problem in the registry, Code 19.
Re-did DC, did the driver CAB clean, reinstall drivers, and nothing. System was completely hosed. Luckily I was running Restore and was able to get it back to a state before trying the Omega's. Any idea why this happened, was it the 45.23's? |

Ran DC, now I can't install any drivers!
I downloaded DC 1.9 as I was having driver issues and wanted a clean slate before I reinstalled the 45.23 drivers. I ran DC and now I can't install any vid drivers. If I try to install the drivers, it seems like it ran successfully, but once I reboot the drivers aren't installed at all. Basically, windows detects the vid card once I reboot and tries to install it's own driver without success. Hopefully this doesn't sound that confusing, but I have no idea how to get the 45.23 drivers installed successfully.
Any help on this is appreciated. BTW, I have an MSI g4 Ti4200 and MSI K7N2 Delta Mobo (Nforce2) TIA **Just to add some more info to this, I think I may have ran DC at the wrong time. I originally uninstalled the 45.23 drivers in XP, and before rebooting I ran DC (not in safe mode) and then rebooted. Wondering if this might have any effect on why I can't install any drivers. Sounds like you have the same issue as me. I was lucky as I had System Restore running. Otherwise, you may have to figure out which registry setting is messed up, or worse, reinstall windows! Maybe swapping in and out an old video card would work?

Re-installing XP did the trick. It's too bad I had to go that route, but at least I have working vid drivers now.

First of all you really need to follow the readme steps or it can go wrong. Also i am working on DC2 now and i have until now 1 person testing it, because no others apply. He uninstalled nvidia drivers and installed 45.23 and 24 succesfully, so maybe it is the new cleaning file, but if no others apply than it is really difficult to see if it really works.
