Modded catalyst files for mobility users

Patje No I havent I am going to try them too .But I am going crazy because the 4.11 or 4.10 works perfect with every game but no video or dvd movie from dvd , cd or from hard disk . I even try with windows media player and a small sample video in the directary of media player but the same thing happened EVERYTHING FREEZE AND I HAVE TO RESTART WINDOWS Please help!!!!!!!!!

As I recall, the 4.12 mod wasn't working. Has it been fixed?

@Spid, try the 4.12 drivers, they might solve the problem.
@Xclaude, the mod has been working for me so... i guess it's fixed lol
but it might be possible i have to make a few changes, cause ati updated their 4.12 release.

Ok Patje, you really need to help me on this...

This happened to me 3-4 times already since the last 3-4 recent updates... I have let it slide, but now HL2 is critical for me so I would really appreciate a solution.

The problem:
For every new release whether it's Omega or modded Catalyst, I was able to instal the driver fine, but the immediately after the reboot the screen flickers uncontrolably. I can see my desktop when it flickers on, and when it flickers off it's black screen. This flickering is very fast. About 1 flicker every .5 second.

What I have tried:
I tried the thorough procedure to uninstal old and reinstal new driver method:
1) uninstal using Add/remove programs in control panel.
2) reboot system as requested after uninstal.
3) after system reboots, run DriverCleaner 3 for ATI.
4) reboot after DriverCleaner 3 is done for completeness.
5) after system reboots.... for Omegas, I just instal the driver. for Catalyst, I extract to default directory and then mod. Either case, driver instals fine and then requests for restart. I comply with request to restart the system.
6) the reboot sequence is perfectly fine. video is still okay on the logon screen where I input my password. Until desktop loads and it begins to flicker as described in the problem.
7) I can not use my system so I have to hard shut it off by holding the power button for 4 seconds.
8) reboot into safemode by tapping f8. Uninstal the video driver as it is installed but not functioning.
9) reboot back into normal window with no driver. This is the state I am in right now: no driver installed.

What worked:
The Omega that is based off the 4.5 Catalyst works flawlessly.(way out of date)
The 4.11 Catalyst using Patje's mod utility works flawlessly.
The driver from Sager, my notebook manufacturer, works flawlessly(although out of date)

Where I got my files:
I got the Omegas from none other than Omegadriver.net
I got the 4.11 its mod and 4.12 and its mod from this thread. This post is done AFTER Patje updated his 4.12 mod to accomodate with ATI's change to the 4.12 to support win2k, that means, I have the latest and greatest files in use.

What I have:
I own a Sager notebook model NP3790 with Mobility Radeon 9700 128mb. I am sure it is the Mobility Radeon 9700 because I have a sticker on the notebook to show. This Sager NP3790 notebook utilize the same shell as the Voodoo envy m360 if that would make a good reference.

I run Windows XP Pro SP2.

I would REALLY appreciate it if someone look into this and help me out. I thought I can just over look the latest driver... but now I feel VERY deprived.... HL2 is greatly optimized with 4.12... yet I can't even instal the driver.

Please help me.

ok, serious now,

here are a few things that pop into my mind.

1) bios update, check alienware for bios updates, not only for your laptop but also for your vid card.

2) you say: "The 4.11 Catalyst using Patje's mod utility works flawlessly." that means you downloaded cat 4.11 and the modded files, not the modtool right?
that would be strange, cause the info i add in 4.11 and 4.12 modded files are the same.
that's why i'm thinking of point 1.

3) another suggestion, install an old working driver and then overinstall the modded 4.12 wihtout uninstalling etc.

I'm hoping my first tought will fix it and you can start playing the mother of all games

crap, I made a mistake.

you are right, I just tried installing 4.11 again using your mod files found here and yes, identical problem as 4.12.

So now I will reinstal 4.11 using the modtool with GUI and all.

Also, when I say latest and greatest, i mean the files that are most recently available here. I haven't touch the bios yet.

Also, I wouldn't know about flashing bios or what that is.

My notebook is a Sager and shares the same shell as VooDoo computer. Not alienware.

*sigh* I don't know how you did it with your modtool Patje, but it worked very nicely. I hope you can implement the same method for 4.12? I don't know, but right after this post, I will reinstal 4.11 using the modtool. Then I will apply your suggestion of overinstal. Hope it will work. :-/

EDIT: The modtool alone does NOT allow me to instal 4.11 Catalyst.(even though it modified the files) I still have to go in and edit the inf file by deleting some part.

Alright! I hope it's working.

I installed 4.11 Catalyst using modtool and edit inf.
I installed CCC 4.11

Then I overinstal 4.11 with 4.12 using the modded files found here.

NO PROBLEMS.

But I'm not sure if it actually "works"

what I understand is that you indeed have mobility 9700.
I'm a bit confused now, you installed the 4.12's right?
do you still have the flickering issue?
From what i can read the driver was installed succesfully.

Patje thank you for replay. I install 4.12 and now when i put a dvd movie I get the messege "Create overlay failed .Please lower your screan resolution or color deapth and try agai" I did that resolution 800x600 and 16bit color but I still get the same messege. Also when I try to play AVI with win.media player I can't see anything but I can hear the sound.I forgete to tell you that my dvd has working with the old drivers that was installed from ACER (date 2002) for my Radeon mobility card 9000 and also I had no problem with 4.9 (both dvd and games worked) before I try to install 4.10.Please ANY IDEA ????AND THANK YOU AGAIN

Did you, overinstall the new drivers? or did you use drivercleaner or ati uninstaller first?
if so, try installing an older working set, the overinstall the 4.11 or 4.12's to see if that helps

Oh yea, I'm uncertain about overinstalling. It paranoys me a bit thinking maybe some part of 4.11 still hangs around and I don't have a complete 4.12 running.

But sounds good if it is 4.12.

That "fix"... it wouldn't help me from a clean 4.12 instal would it?

Patje really thanks for your work, i discovered it only now, and i was getting desperate with my old Dell drivers...

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 with a 9700 mobility 128 Megs on it
I installed catalyst 4.11 with your modded files, not with the modder. Usually i don't use the pc to watch DVDs, so all i can say it's that games are working really fine. But i have a little problem, while installing the setup recognized my graphics card as a Radeon 9600, not a mobility 9700 and so it installed 9600 drivers. As I said it all works fine, but i'm a little worried about that, can you tell me if this is a normal thing?

Edit: I made "update driver", and choose manually Radeon 9700 from the .inf file
Everything is ok by now, but i still can't understand if i had to find a "Mobility 9700" in the .inf, i searched for it but there wasn't!

New problem....

I managed to instal 4.12 Catalyst and was very happy, until... I play Counter Strike Source. In the map de_dust, inside the tunnel, I'm getting sub 20 frames, and my sound echoes and stutter like no tomorow, unplayable. Outside of the tunnel though, I was able to see 60fps at times, which I never got to before with the Sager driver.

@Xclaude: That might be a setting in the control panel or CS:S. try raising or lower different settings like AA for instance.

@Zizzo, that's because the 9700 and the 9600 are the same cards. The 9700 is better cause it has higher clock speeds. the reason why it detects it as a 9600 is because it looks at the device ID. which is the same as the 9700. normally you have to add a specific ID to a certain string but that would be almost impossible to do.

@Spid: It won't harm to reisntall the control panel, so go ahead

Patje thank you again. I try everything to you suggest but nothing no video, no dvd player. After all that I format again my laptop and try again . After that with the old drivers everything was good for dvd but not for games , bacause the drivers are since 2002. So I overinstall 4.12 but the same happened . This time I found something when I go to DXDIAG and inactivate direct 3d and direct draw dvd plays well. So if there is nothing else to do everytime I want to see a dvd I am going to inactivate direct 3d and direct draw. BUT ITS CRAZY

hi, I'm a new french member.

Patje, i think the main problem people here are faced with is a problem of installation path.

To the others : I thought that the "driver pack" folder (i.e wxp-8-08-041110a-019199) had to be specified in the modding tool, but you must give only the path where the "ATI" folder is...

Actually, if you specify a wrong folder so that the files to mod are not found, there is no error message, and the setup will run saying "info File not found...".

Hi Patje,

I'm still having problems with my native resolution of 1280x800. It seems like for a while now that the custom/widescreen resolutions are no longer available or working with the mods...

Right now I've installed the newest 4.12 beta (19253) drivers from ATI's website, and some simple copy and pasting got your 4.12 beta mod to work with the new 4.12.

Is there some INF file that needs to be patched? or something in the registry which needs to be tweaked in order to enable the custom resolutions?

Never mind! ignore me!

I did some more cutting and pasting with the .INF file just going through line by line within my appropriate video chipset settings, comparing values between Omega's 2.5.90 and your 4.12 patch and i've managed to get it all working at 1280x800...

I think I had gotten lazy when fixing the INF file, and I only fixed the source location for the driver binarys (b_19200 -> b_19233) and so I completely forgot to also copy and paste over the registry settings for my video chipset... hahaha

Walking through that disgusting INF file at 800x600 really makes me fully appreciate your hard work fixing up that thing...

Has the modded 4.12 file, available for download on the first page of this topic been changed since the first day it was posted? I have a mobility 9600 and it doesn't work for me. Maybe I'm not holding my mouth just right or something.

@GregS: yes, both the modded files for 4.12 and the 4.12 driver itself have changed. Just look at the first post and you will see there is an edit.

And patje, thank you for the great work. With those new 4.12 and your new modded files i have been able to install them successfully. Great work!

i use 4.11 with 4.11 modded files but i found my card as "ATI Mobility Radeon 9000" but my chip type is "Mobility Radeon 9200 AGP (0x4C66)" How to slove this problem
P.S. doesn't have ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 in the list of driver?

Well, the mobility radeon 9000 also has device ID 0x4c66 thats why it installs the 9000
but it is not a problem because they are the same cards. only difference is the clock speeds. trust me, your card is fully functional as a 9200 but it is only displayed as a 9000

it's the same as the 9600 and the 9700, don't worry about it.
