Thanks to francovilar, it worked great for me. You did copy and paste from the omegas, didn't you? No problems with DVD playback or games!

Thanks also to Patje, HL2 runs very smooth now.

@GregS: You have the older version of catalyst 4.12 that's why you don't have the CX_19199 file.
but that doens't mather, use the CX_19253.
Which combo of files do I use? I have all of them downloaded and just now checked to see which ones I used on my last attempt and here's what I used

http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4701.html -with this
HERE MODDED412b

If I understand you correctly then I need to use your modded412b file with ATI's original 412b driver download that doesn't have W2k support.

GregS,

you need catalyst 4.12. ati has re-released that file and icluded win2k support
that file can be used with the modded412b

so it doens't mather if you use win2k or winxp, get the catalyst 4.12 file from http://www.ati.com/support/infobase/4701.html

then get the modded412b to add mobility support.

the modded412 are there for those who have the original 4.12 without win2k support.

That should clear it up i guess (i hope )

make sure you find the correct section in the file. if the line does not exist, try adding the line.
.
Well I have both versions of modded 4.12 and both ATI 4.12 driver versions, one with W2k and the other without. As I mentioned earlier, I can get Pj's modded 4.12b and ATI 4.12 with W2k to load up but I'm still missing tabs in control panel. I still must not be using the right combo together or maybe I'm not holding my mouth just right . As for the 1280x800 tip, I did get it to work though. My inf file didn't have DALNonStandardModesBCD5, it had DALNonStandardModesBCD1 and DALNonStandardModesBCD2. So I copied the modes posted by "francovilar" into each DALNonStandardModesBCD entry (in my case 1 & 2) and noticed in the pasting process there were spaces between some of the entries so I backspaced them to look uniform like the original and as others have testified it worked. I guess now I can at least do away with the PowerStrip program I had been using to get the 1280x800 custom resolution with.

Smartgart, Powerplay and on the first install try I was also missing the color tab. My last few attempts to install the color tab appeared but the other two are missing. I'm probably installing the wrong combo of mod file and ati files although I don't see how I can be since I downloaded ati file and the corresponding mod file to the same folder.

Just loaded the 4.12 modded drivers on an HP nc6000 (w/ Mobility 9600). Works better than stock HP drivers!! It fixed issues I had with loading netmeeting and loosing my desktop image upon return form screensaver. I am running a dual desktop, which is also working perfectly.

you have installed the driver via devicemanager, right?
because if you do that and then install the control panel seperatly (by going to c:\ati\...\cpanel) you will not get the smartgart-tab (don't know about powerplay, but could be the same)...

Finally! someone with the same problem and exactly the same laptop! I've got a acer aspire 1604LC and i've tried every driver possible (that works with NFSU2) and every time the games work fine but the avi's/dvd's/mpeg's make the computer freeze and a power off is the only way out. Turning off directdraw seems to help, but that's not a comfortable sollution . It seems to me that the newest catalyst version 4.x is the problem or directx 9 but i'm not sure....

Wow!! A thread with the same problem! Finally!! I got the same problem on my Hp Ze4400 series laptop. Games work great but video dont work. Modded catalyst 4.9 works fine for me, 4.12 nadda. Omega & unian drivers have the same problem. Im gonna try 4.11.

I was looking around and I noticed in the Ati control panel, under monitors that they were all default monitors..... When I had 4.9 and older it did show my type of display. Also under the monitor settings I cannot check the hide modes box. Could these 2 be the problem to our video freeze?

that might, however i'm guessing it's a driver problem. i'm still experimenting with different possibilties

Found this on Omega's site....

Important Notes:

1. Well, at last, the fix for the dreaded overlay video bug has been found. The cause IS NOT the ATI drivers or any of my settings, the cause is a hardware bug, more specifically a BIOS bug. In the testing, two people already updated their Sager notebooks with a new BIOS provided by Sager and the video problem is GONE! So I encourage you to go to your manufacturer's web page and see if a new bios update has been issued for your laptop, and
if not, e-mail the manufacturer so they can rush out a fix for this.

The only problem is I already just got a bios update like 2 months ago...

Ya I did.. Its weird though cause Cat 4.9 with DH mod tool works fine. Cat 4.12 has the video play back bug. Have not tried 4.11 yet. I have also downloaded and tried 4 Omega drivers, 3 Unian Drivers, 1 TC driver and they all had the video bug. There has to be a solution.... Oh well the search is on. Thanks fot the help Patje!

Confused

Ok, I am really confused on how to use these. I have a dell inspiron 8500 with a ati radeon mobility 9000 I think 32mb. I am trying to install the 4.12 beta drivers. I downloaded the 4.12 package and it extracted and as you said gave me the error. Then I took the modded 4.12 and put those files in the ati folder it extracted to. I clicked the setup and it gave me some .inf errors so I am confused if I even installed this correctly or whats happening. So right now I resorted back to the latest omega drivers.

I installed the 4.12 drivers on my desktop computer that has a 9800 pro and they gave me a ~10 fps boost so I thought it would be good to install them on my laptop also.

If someone could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Yess!! the vague bug has got a name! "The video bug" Tadaa! I always thought that my laptop was the problem, but now i see that there are more laptops with the R9000 from different brands that have the same bug! I just updated the bios of my acer 1604lc to version A1C but the problem is still there . And going back to an older version of the omega drivers is not an option because the newer games simply don't work. Aaaaah! the horror!!

Thanks all for the input in this thread..
I have installed the Cat 4.12b modded on my laptop with a 9700 128MB.
As far as widescreen goes, I had the same problem as Francovilar and Gregs... Like Gregs my inf didnt have the line that Francovilar replaced, so I just changed the 'HKR,, DALNonStandardModesBCD1' line t othe settings that were suggested, then installed.

The drivers run sweet - and I can now play HL2 at work

Thanks also to Patje

Hope this helps!

Hi all,

for what it's worth, I found another version of 4.12 beta for mobile cards that's been (re)modded from Patje's by this guy Andrew.

It's for mobile cards that aren't detected by the standard ATi driver setup - I've installed it and it's working perfectly - there's no complications, just run the setup. Admittedly HL2, Doom 3 et al were running fine anyway so I can't comment about issues with older versions. I still have minor stuttering though, so I guess I'll need to update my Steam client...

http://www.ebbatson.com/wxp-8-08-041...9-mobility.zip

http://www.ebbatson.com/blog/

I have a 3.0Ghz Inspiron 9100, 256 MR 9800, 1Gb RAM, 60Gb 7200rpm disk, XP Pro SP2, and DirectX9.0c. It's pretty clean apart from several big audio apps and a few games.

I run HL2 at max res and almost all detail turned on (eg 'only' 2xAA). The odd stutter aside, it's super smooth...I run Doom 3 with high detail at 1024x768. I could probably push it further with more tweaking, but it looks great and is very stable - I need nothing more!

I am trying to install the 4.12B drivers on my E-machines M6810 w/ATI 9600 64mb. I am able to get to the catalyst install point where I mod the files, the modded files install (copy over) then the install process starts again but then the ATI set up states that have incompatible vid card????? Has anyone else had this issue? Any help would be appreciated due to the fact the drivers on this sytem are almost 1yr old.

Thanks

hi, just to make sure the files got replaced try this:

Go to the device manager, select the currently installed card and choose update driver.
Select the option to display a list of devices.
Select HAVE DISK, and specify the files under C:\ati\support\...\driver\xxx.INF
select your card from the list. if its not in there, something went wrong obviously

strange, did you remove the C:\ati folder before you started from scratch?

Yes, I revomed it then a restart. I also checked update driver and it shows a Radeon 9600.....Not a Mobility 9600...Is this the same?

no, it's not the same, if it doesn't says mobility the files were not overwritten.
maybe you didn't get the correct files which I doubt on the other hand.
if you have winrar, try opening the modded412b.exe with winrar and manually place the files in the according directory.
