Why do I see ATI WDM drivers still after cleaning?

After running driver cleaner for ATI in safe mode, etc. I still see many left over ATI driver files in Windows/System32. Tried live update, no luck.

Main problem I am trying to solve is that XP is not recognizing WDM in device manager. I have ATI Radeon 9000 Pro and TV Wonder Pro cards installed....SP2....Won't work without recognizing WDM drivers, of course. Trying to start over but can't without getting rid of old drivers and registry entries (if there is one!).

Here is what I do

1. Uninstall ATI display driver and control panel from add/remove programs, DO NOT REBOOT.
2. Run Driver Cleaner Before you reboot for ATI, ATI WDM, and ATI CCC if you use that
3. Reboot into safe mode and run driver cleaner again
4. Reboot normally.
5. Install your drivers

Jitter can you tell what files are still there? and also can you tell me the date of a few of them?

The steps you do are also good.

instructions for DC Pro 1.2

Spike --

Thanks very much for the Driver Cleaner product. I used it unsuccessfully about 6 months ago when I was doing an ATI to ATI driver update. However, I used this great product successfully yesterday for an nVidia to nVidia driver update.

My comment is that I notice a particular step which seems to work well and is recommended on these forums -- but that step is not included in the official Read Me for DC Pro 1.2 .

That step is to run DC for the first time in normal Windows operations, and to run it the second time in a Safe mode boot.

I can verify that at least for the latest nVidia drivers, the first run of DC (in normal Windows mode) removes 32 products, followed by the second run of DC (in Safe mode) which will remove another 2 products.

The official instructions say only to 'run DC twice to be sure' but don't specify that the first run should be in normal Windows mode.

Thank you.

vois2, the step to run the first time in windows is not included, because it is a step that can be done, but is not recommended.

There are 2 reasons why i only put in the readme to run it in safe mode

1. because windows has a lot of files not locked anymore in safe mode and if all is ok then none of the files are in use from the driver.

2. with the ATI and nVidia filter it wouldn't give a problem, but i am not 100% sure if the other filters are, because some of those files could still be in use and won't be used by the next reboot and into safe mode.

this question is for SPIKE

hey spike thx for the great app.i finally had an issue using your app but dont know if it was a system config issue or dcpro issue.for some reason when i decided to uninstall winrar and winzip and only use 7zip 4.32 the cab cleaner crashed and did not extract or create the new folder.it left it in bak format and didnt recognize it when retried.after this problem i had other issues not related that caused a format so i havent tried to recreate the problem.i guess my question is,is dhpro 1.2 compatable with just 7zip installed and windows internal zip support disabled.thx again
