Could someone who is still experiencing the issue, and not resolved it yet, please run dxdiag so i can compare my results? Pretty please?

I got exactly the same issue and I am pretty sure it's related to DC.

I had a fresh install of WinXP with the Omega Drivers based on 5.12. When the latest Omega Drivers came out (based on 6.1) I uninstalled them and run DC in Safe Mode. Selected all ATi related subjects and ran it. After a reboot I installed the latest Omega Drivers.

Before no problems, now I can play everything except mpg/mpeg movies and embedded movies.

This really sucks, since my system is just fresh from a reinstall and I really don't fancy to run WinXP install again and mess my entire registry and drivers up.

EDIT:
- Reinstall of codecs and WMP didn't work
- It doesn't work with any other media player either
- dxdiag gives an error for DirectShow

EDIT2:
- AVI doesn't work either
- WMV, WMF and MP3 are fine
- Installed default ATi drivers (first cleaned Omega), no difference
- Reinstalled the latest DirextX, no difference

A one week old install of WinXP completly wasted I guess, well I'd go without media then, I can't be asked to reinstall again. Damnit .

ronnn that would really help me if you can send me the old and new registry.

Somebody mailed me and fixed it for him. He reinstalled divx then all was working. So maybe reinstall the codecs you have and install media player classic. I think that could fix it. Media player classic is also in Quicktime Alternative.

Halleluja, praise the lord!! No, not that I found the solution, although perhaps I did, but because I finally found some fellow sufferers!

Hello, my name is Ray (in choir: "HI RAY!") thank you for listening to my story.

It all happened about a week or so ago, it was a bright suny day outside and the bi...
Anyway, I put back an old ghost and wiped the drivers with DC. Then I installed the 5.13 ccc and discovered that no format whatsoever would play.
Avi wmv mpg asf, you name it, it was dead. Directshow error.

Gspot said all was fine and the codecs were there. I re-installed the codec pack I use (K-lite) but no effect. I tried another codec pack, also no succes.
Re-installing DirectX didn't seem to do anything, but that could be because it didn't see anything wrong with the systemfiles or else it would've corrected... something.
I used registry fixers, upgraders, repair crap and as expected... no effect.

Then I started Googling and found this, it's a support page from MS that talks about the 'no filter to render the stream' error and what to do. It talks about exactly the key that seems to be missing (allegedly) because of DC.

I re-inserted the key but no luck (keep this in mind though).

Then I started checking the Ati drivers from the beginning. Uninstalling and cleaning with DC and re-installing 5.11.
This somehow fixed the problem!! (don't get too excited, keep reading).
After this I upgraded in steps to 5.13 ccc and all was well, it worked again and the sky was blue!

What did I learn/conclude from my ordeal and from what I read here on DH?

DC may have been the culprit in causing the problem. But the problem was caused by 1 of the Ati cleaning modules, not all of them.
The reason why I think this is because I remember selecting ALL Ati modules the first time I used DC which ultimately gave me these problems.
Later I used only the specific Ati, Ati ccc and Ati wdm modules and no others.

Following MS's instructions may have helped in repairing the damage, actually I think it was the main help considering that many people here tried what I did, EXCEPT the MS procedure, and had no succes.

So do yourself a favor and try this:
1. Uninstall drivers and ccc from Ati by regular procedure.
2. Only then use DC with only the 3 modules I used.
3. Add the registry key with the procedure supplied above.
4. Re-boot and install the required drivers.

Now it should work.
(perhaps fixing the reg first won't hurt as long as you don't use all DC modules to kill the key again, but keep it in mind anyway)

Little bonus:
Too lazy to find the key? Trust me enough to help you some more? Then just copy/paste the below key to an empty notepad and save it. rename the file to *.reg (* = any name you want) and doubleclick it. Click op Ok and the key is inserted automagically.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{DA4E3DA0-D07D-11d0-BD50-00A0C911CE86}\Instance\{083863F1-70DE-11d0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}]

tijgert, you are amazing!

That just fixed the problem for me, I didn't even have to reinstall anything, just put this in NotePad:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{DA4E3DA0-D07D-11d0-BD50-00A0C911CE86}\Instance\{083863F1-70DE-11d0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}]
"CLSID"="{083863F1-70DE-11d0-BD40-00A0C911CE86}"
"FriendlyName"="DirectShow Filters"
"Merit"=dword:00600000
You forgot the "Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00" part, most people will need to include that for it to execute.

But that's all I did, apply the *.reg file, reboot the system and everything was working again. Wonderful!

EDIT:
Embedded webmovies still don't work though.

I think it can actually be worse if you have ran a reg cleaner/repairer since that key was deleted, as I was missing the file in both places, so here is yet another one to use!

*edit* guess i should confirm that this did fix it for me as well, thanks very much tijgert and others!

rgreen83 did you run some other cleaner? becuse i know that DC does not clean HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{DA4E3DA0-D07D-11d0-BD50-00A0C911CE86}

It only deleted HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{DA4E3DA 0-D07D-11d0-BD50-00A0C911CE86} which is fixed in the new version, because this key can't be deleted.

This problem with the filter is fixed in the new DC Pro 1.4 version. It only has a few updates, but this fix is important. Sorry for the problems caused and thanx for all the logs and info to solve it. I hope it solves it for the others also.

Crap, I read this after I went through the long extensive repair process. I forgot to uninstall daemon tools and of course windows recognized it as my primary dvdrom so I had to direct to the right source for every file - took ages. Oh well at least I have my internet radio back. Off to .

Anyways thanks all for your help!!

edit: Not sure what an embedded web movie is, but I do get NHL tv replays fine.

yeah spike I did about a thousand different things including running a regcleaner, its the only reason I can think that string would also be deleted, I just thought Id let others know it was missing in both places for me and have a way for them to fix it if it happened to them also. BTW, thanks for the quick fix!

I was to enthousiast, it indeed worked quite a bit but it's still veyr badly screwed up.

Embedded movies in webpages still won't play, MP3's don't play, movies play without any sound. It's still pretty badly messed up, some plays again, but I think it's better to go for a complete reformat and just never use DC again, because I rather have a driver issue then so many codec problems.

This truly sucks though .

I tried a few web page WMP embedded content and they all played fine.

I should also mention that I forgot to tell you I also installed WMP10 just before going to Windows Update after the repair XP install.

I figured that the repair install might have put some WMP9 stuff back so I did that too. I use the full download setup file from the Windows Media website download page. Gotta be connected to the net for it to work properly as it downloads that MSN Music stuff as part of its install.

Ah! So I see it was the reg key removed by that DC filter. I do have a VIVO card (just don't use that part, but do install the WDM's even before running the full Cat package). Its the x850PRO. I figured it was best to use all the ATI filters except the IGP stuff as XP might have put some of its own files or ATI might not have cleaned out completly with its uninstaller.

Nice that you fixed this in the new DC. I'll go get that now.

I'll be using it soon, as I'm gonna try to go all retro on my computer shortly. I just ordered a SBLive 5.1 Platinum (New! He says), from ebay. $60. I already have a CT4760 (X-Gamer) and an SB0100 (first dumbed down issue), but never had a breakout box for the Live. I bought an Adaptec PCI ATA Controller card and will put my IDE HD 250GB on that and run 98SE! I'll install with 120 GB and extend it to full with Partition Magic 8 after the Adaptec driver is installed. I'll install the VXD's and reserve IRQ 5 in the bios for ISA to (hopefully) get the SB16 within Windows to behave itself. No Dos-Mode SB driver though, as I don't think they'll work on this motherboard with its hogging of real mode memory with all its MB devices. Can't completely shut off the SATA, just allows turning off the boot rom, and I'm not willing to turn off USB 2.0. But Dosbox works in 98 so I'll use that for stuff that won't run in Windows dos. I don't think turning off the Marvell Giga LAN makes a difference so I'll still use that. I have a D-Link PCI Giga, but I think the less PCI I use with the SBLive the better.

Why? I don't know. Because it's there?

I'll use AVG free instead of my McAfee subscription as that works better as far as resource hogging than McAfee on 98. That's a shame since McAfee scans email instantly whereas AVG makes you wait, and wait.

MMC 9.08 has been working fine on my 98SE partition, but I have doubts about installing it with VXD soundcard drivers. I may just use PowerDVD instead. I've got PVD 3. 4, 5, and 6. I think I'll use PVD4 as that plays stuff like VCD's better than the later ones and still was set up to handle older soundcards properly, and fixed stuff from PVD3.

And, if you're wondering, I'll be secure as I manually install every darned Windows Update so when I get there there's usually nothing I have not already installed! That MDGx site keeps my up to date even without installing unofficial service packs. I like doing it myself so I know what I installed. I apply the 256 color systray icons and Windows 2000 color scheme myself and do all the memory optimiztions manually.

I will need to use Norton Utilities 2002 (got it, haven't used it in years), as ScanDisc with big hard drives is a no-no. I'll custom install without the Protected Recycle Bin and registry scanners and fixers. Just want the Disc tool and Speed Disc.

Going Retro is fun! Hope my board can handle it. I also wonder what I'm actually getting as the ebay ad claims it's a Live 5.1, but puts the Audigy 2 ZS specs for the card, but Live 5.1 stuff for the rest. I think he did that for people who want to price compare as clicking on the card specs gives you bizrate price comparisons using the Audigy 2. He wouldn't be able to show SBLive prices as no one's selling them now. I'm also wondering how he got a hold of a "new" SBLive 5.1 Platinum box and got it cheap enough to be able to sell it buy it now for $60. Hmmm. Whatever, I've got an SB0100 that'll work with it if he did mix an Audigy 2 with the LiveDriveIR stuff. As long as the CD's are the SBLive 5.1 Platinum cd's anyway, and the descriptions sound like they are. My SB0100 cd doesn't have Remote Center on it so I need that thing. Uh, oh!

Eh, the great experiment begins in about a week.

Mad Scientist at work here!

SaUrOnNL did you also tried to reinstall the codecs like i posted in my previous post?

Eck if you notice any more things just report it, because that is the only way i can fix it and improve my program. I read sometimes on other forums that some people have problems, but it is bad that they never report it to me, because with that and a description and the log files i can look into it and fix it. So i hope more people will report things. So thanx to all of you for reporting it and i will keep working on the filters.

Sure thing!

This is the first time I had a problem after updating the Cat's, and I nearly always use DriverCleaner to do it. I figured it best to try to help work out if the problem was solvable here, rather than just doing an ATI problem report not knowing if the ATI stuff had caused it or not.

See! We worked it out and know what caused it and how to fix it or not get the problem now.

Great program. I'm always surprised by how much stuff is left behind even after using the ATI official software remover program.

And, hey, if anyone can successfully get the SBLive stuff working on this newer board it's me! I somehow managed to run my old Abit KT7A for years while using the Live CT4760 and SB0100. A few bios adjustments and putting the card in the right PCI slot to make it happy was all it took. This, I think, will be more of a challenge.

Spike - I sent you pre-repair reg files and the after-repair files. I am dumb about this stuff - so they are com files - open with winrar - don't execute them!

Eck - thanks much! Was super helpfull.

I had problems with using repair as I did not unistall daemon virtual cdrom - but did get it done. The cat 6.1 was left intact, but at first ie explorer did not work properly so windows update would not work (got a message to update to 5.0 or newer). Tried to manually update, but told me my version was newer. I updated direct x and than somewhere along the way system update decided to work. All went well after that - but streaming video showed the showtime error. Reinstalled wmp 10 and all seems perfect.

Thanks again to all - Drivercleaner is the best and will happily use the program again when this issue is out of the way.

Being cautious I will give it a couple of days - before cleaning up and installing the new omegas. Had them in and they ran nicely, except for this other stuff, went back to the official cats just to be safe. Anyways Drivercleaner rocks.

Anyways I do agree with your comments about soundblaster. Have an audigy 2 oem and the latest drivers don't recognize my card (none in the system). Had to unpack them to install. They have the goofiest drivers, but nice hardware. Have a sblive value (old thing) in second computer and it sounds great. Now I am well off topic - sorry.

I try all registry files, reinstall all what I can - mp3 now play. MediaPlayer Classic from K-Lite play all? but... WMP10 and ATI MMC File Player play video WITHOUT sound.

I cannot uninstal and reinstall WMP10 - it integrate to WinXP by n-lite integrator.

You should be able to install WMP10 from the setup file available from the Microsoft Windows Media website.

But that won't work for this. I needed to do a repair install. I'm surprised the registry fix didn't work for you as others have found it successful.

What's going on with you is your system mp3 playback isn't working, so WMP and ATI File Player that use that can't play the files.

I too found that players with their own devices like Quicktime and RealPlayer played mp3's fine.

If the registry fix didn't work for you then I fear you will need to do a repair XP install from the XP cd to fix this. Then, after it's done, reinstall the Catalyst's over themselves to get Smartgart back, and install WMP10 over itself to fix whatever the XP reinstall did. Then go get all the Windows Updates from the WindowsUpdate site. The repair puts back the unpatched files so you need to let XP do all the updates again. But your installed files and software should all work as before.

Just don't do a clean install by mistake!

It's interesting that mp3 is not the only file format affected. I hadn't tried the others.

I suggest setting all virusscanner options to off and setting it not to run at startup. Also set your firewall not to run at startup. Then shutdown your computer and unplug your ethernet card. This is better than disabling your ethernet connection within Windows (what I do when I want to clean boot for stuff), as the XP installer otherwise would activate the connection when it installs the driver but leave the Windows Firewall off as it does retain all software settings for a repair install (but not hardware, as it installs the drivers fresh). So you'd wind up booting after install to an unfirewalled active internet connection! So just unplug the thing and leave device manager alone.

Then boot to the Bios so you can put in your XP cd, save the settings (no need to change if you already can boot to cd) and exit the bios.

Press the spacebar when prompted to boot to the XP cd, don't press R to go into the recovery console, do press R to repair the current Windows installation.

Reinstall the Catalysts right over themselves to get back Smartgart, reboot, set your firewall and virusscanner to the defaults again and shut down to reconnect your ethernet.

On reboot go to Windows Update and keep going back after each reboot untill you get everything.

All fixed. Except if some of your hardware uses unsigned or you prefer older drivers than XP installs. Then you need to update them. I was lucky this time as all the drivers I was using were signed and the latest, so XP just used them.

I'm not following you on how to do the CD recovery thing....

First you say not to hit R, then you say to hit R....could you be a little more clear please? I never did a Windows CD Repair Installation before.

Ah! Confusing each time I have done it as well as the telling.

First of all, turn off all the scanning options in your virusscanner and tell it not to run at startup.

Tell your firewall not to run at startup.

Shut down.

Unplug your modem from the powerstrip and also the ethernet plug from your computer.

Boot to your bios (usually the delete key, sometimes F1).

Put in your XP cd. Make sure your bios settings allow booting from the cd.

Save and exit.

Press the spacebar to boot to cd when prompted.

Eventually you'll get the option to repair Windows using the Recovery Console. You don't want that. (But, no harm if you wind up there, just type exit to reboot.)

If your computer needs SATA, SCSI, etc drivers then make sure you have the floppy and hit F6 when prompted. After it copies some files it'll prompt you to hit S (if you did the F6 thing). Then you insert the floppy and choose the driver from the list that comes up.

Eventually you'll get a screen that asks you whether you want to attempt to repair the current Windows installation, and if so to hit R, or to continue installing a fresh installation by pressing enter. This is where you press R.

Accept the EULA (F8), if it's an XP upgrade CD supply it with a 9x cd if it asks then switch the cd back to the XP cd and let setup continue.

Be sure not to press the spacebar to boot to the cd when it reboots, setup needs to boot to the hard drive to do the installation.

When done, if all your drivers were signed and later than what XP comes with, you just need to run the Catalyst install to get back Smartgart, reenable your virusscanner and firewall, shutdown and plug in your ethernet and modem, reboot and install WMP10 over itself with the setup file from the Windows Media website, and do all the WindowsUpdate's from the Windows Update website.

If you were using unsigned or old preferred drivers then you need to reinstall those.

Done and fixed (hopefully.)

This is better than erasing your whole hard drive and installing all your software and files again, eh? Everything should be and work as it did before, except this problem will be fixed.

Too bad that registry fix didn't work for you. That's even easier!

Please back up any files you don't want to lose. There's always a risk even though I've never had this fail to this point. It can!

Maybe I'm just stupid or something, but I see no second option to press R.

Upon boot of the CD I get, ENTER to continue, R for recovery console or F3 to quit.

If I hit ENTER to continue, I see no options to hit R. Just set up Windows in current partition, delete the partition, setup in unpartitioned space or quit.

Where is this second chance to hit R?

I tried the registry entries and they fixed more stuff, but I still get no audio in WMV files....even in some games I have no audio during movies, so this Windows Repair is apparently something I need to do, but I'm still not clear on how to do it.

I don't remember exactly where the prompt will come, but of course you will be installing Windows to the current partition. So you hit enter there. Eventually you're gonna be asked whether you want setup to repair the current Windows installation (R) or setup a new fresh installation (Enter). So there you would hit R.

Of course you're not stupid. I say prayers everytime I need to try this as I only enjoy formatting when it's my choice to do so when I trying different stuff. I don't like it and get very worried to think I might need to if things don't go well. And it's always a possibility they may not.

But like I said, repair install's haven't blown up in my face yet.
