@ spike
I've tested this on a brand new installation of Windows, freshly reformatted volume, and talking with the guys over at Divx a little more, they're thinking the same thing, just registry keys get deleted. For some reason for me though, reregistering that file fixed part of the problem for me. WMP refuses to play plain old MP3 files but I dont really care about that. I'll use the registry fixes posted above. What I did was use DCP 1.3 to clean out any residual Microsoft ATI drivers that XP comes with on a fresh install of Windows. I've always done this since as long as I can remember, and never had problems untill I tried version 1.3 apparently. I didnt think anything of it because it's part of my normal system preperations after installation of XP. My log output follows -------------------------------------------------------- ---- Driver Cleaner Professional Edition 1.3 ---- 24-01-2006 -- 21:42:51 -------------------------------------------------------- - ATI - ATI CCC - ATI HydraVision - ATI IGP - ATI MMC - ATI Remote Wonder - ATI TV Wonder - ATI Uninstall Utility - ATI WDM File Deleted (C:\WINDOWS\Inf\Ati*.inf) File Deleted (C:\WINDOWS\Inf\Ati*.PNF) File Deleted (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ati2cqag.dll) File Deleted (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ati2dvag.dll) File Deleted (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ati3d1ag.dll) File Deleted (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ati3duag.dll) File Deleted (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ativvaxx.dll) File Deleted (C:\WINDOWS\system32\Drivers\ati2mtag.sys) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ATI Technologies\CBT) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Conferencin g\CaptureDevices\ATI Multimedia Video Driver) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Conferencin g\CaptureDevices\ATI Video Basic Capture Driver) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentcontrolSet\Servi ces\ati2mtag) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servi ces\Eventlog\System\ati2mtag) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\ ati2mtag) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Services\ Eventlog\System\ati2mtag) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\C lass\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\C lass\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\V ideo\{2727551C-178E-4E2E-BB98-3E65110888FC}) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\V ideo\{45BD74FF-C840-4099-8C72-3F18381793E6}) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\C lass\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0000) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\C lass\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\0001) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\V ideo\{2727551C-178E-4E2E-BB98-3E65110888FC}) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet002\Control\V ideo\{45BD74FF-C840-4099-8C72-3F18381793E6}) Registry Deleted (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{DA4E3D A0-D07D-11d0-BD50-00A0C911CE86}) Registry Deleted (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{17CCA71B-ECD7-11D0-B908-00A0C9223196}) I guess the log shows all the filters I used to remove files. If it's been fixed in 1.4, I'll use that version and trash 1.3. I know that DCP does not unregister files, but it does delete certain registry entries. Anyways, I'll try the reg fixes as posted above and cross my fingers. Thanks for the help. |

Nix1999 DC Pro 1.4 fixes this problem. There was a problem with the ATI TV Wonder filter and that was new in 1.3, so i fixed that all in 1.4. The zip file with the reg keys posted earlier should fix your problem.

Hey guys, I hate to do this but I experienced this same exact problem while using DCPro 1.4.
I recently did a fresh install of xp, and was going to give DHzer0point_0.8195_F drivers a try. However, the drivers were not working so I uninstalled them. Later, I had to do another reformat and xp install. This time I used DCPro to clean up the nvidia drivers installed by xp, then installed the DHzer0point_0.8195_F driver. It worked perfectly, but then I experienced the mp3 problem. I had sound while playing movies, but winamp or wmp10 would not play mp3's. Fixed the winamp problem by uninstalling/reinstalling audio driver and selecting new device output in options. This did not work for wmp10 however. I still get the error message "Windows Media Player cannot play, burn, or synchronize the file because a required audio codec is not installed on your computer." I have tried installing/reinstalling wmp10, reinstalling mp3 codecs, the two registry patches(eventhough I had those registry keys). I am one step away from doing another reformat, so if there is anything I can do to help, or if anybody has any suggestions, shoot. I would really like to use the video drivers again, but dont want to experience this problem again. |

Sorry I don't know how to fix this without at least a repair install, if those registry entries didn't work.
Perhaps it would be safest for now to simply run the NVidia driver install over whatever XP installs. Generally, if the NVidia drivers are signed, XP allows the file replacement. Maybe you shouldn't experiment with unofficial drivers until this problem is cleared completely. The official one's seem to update fine as long as you use add/remove if an earlier update is installed. I have all ATI, but I do work on a friends computer with NVidia. I've done it on his both with or without DriverCleaner and it has worked out fine. I think DriverCleaner is more vital for ATI cleaning. Even then, the ATI provided cleaner does a pretty good job now. I still use DriverCleaner for it though. I'm lucky with my x850 that XP doesn't have a driver for it, so I don't have any reason to use it on a fresh XP install.

Thanks for 'default sound device' fix.

I found nothing else whatsoever as a clue to solving this. I did not suspect it had - or would have - anything to do with the default sound device. (I now use kx 4/5 as default). Thank Viola for me too. |
