WMP and ATI Player Mp3 disabled after clean
Hi.
Spike, I'm not sure whether DriverCleaner did this or the ATI MMC install but I just needed to do a repair install of XP to get Mp3 playback back. Mp3 worked in RealPlayer and Quicktime but perhaps those players use their own codecs to play mp3's. WMP10, the ATI File Player, and mplayer2 all would give an error about not being able to play the file format. GSpot had the fraunhoffer codec listed, but couldn't render mp3. mplayer2 gave a link on its error message that said that Microsoft was aware of this error and was working on a resolution. What I had done was uninstall all ATI the recommended ways, using the uninstall stuff in add/remove, reboot to safe mode, and run the latest DriverCleaner. Then I booted up, updated to the latest Catalysts, rebooted to it working, rebooted a 2nd time for certainty, then updated to the latest ATI MMC. I installed all the required components. I rebooted and reset all the file associations using the options panels of WMP10, Quicktime, RealPlayer, and the ATI MMC Configuration. I played a DVD succesfully in ATI DVD Player, and proceeded to run WMP10 thinking everything had gone smoothly. This is when the problem occured. WMP10 couldn't play the mp3's. Neither could ATI File Player. RealPlayer and Quicktime could though. I tried reinstalling WMP10 over itself. I tried renaming the Fraunhofer Codecs and letting WMP10 download them again. It did, but still couldn't play the mp3's. mplayer2 couldn't either. I tried installing DirectX 9.0c's latest December version. That didn't help either. I tried running sfc /scannow. No change. So I let the Windows XP cd boot and ran a repair install. That fixed it. I just needed to reinstall the ATI Catalyst's over itself to get Smartgart back and run Windows Update to get all those updates again. All my drivers are signed so XP had used them so I didn't need to reinstall any other drivers. I ran the DirectX installer, WMP10 installer so all that was up to date. Mp3's work fine now, as do DVD's, in both WMP10 and ATI. Had DriverCleaner done something to cause this, or ATI's newest MMC? I think the DAO is a newer version now, as well as an additional Parental Control encoder being a new required component. But I know DriverCleaner is also new. So I don't know which of these things caused this. Of course, prior to my uninstalling to update all this stuff had been working fine. So something in this updating process killed mp3 but I don't know what it was.

I am not sure, but i don't use ati mmc and when i use dc i can still play mp3 files in WMP10. So either ati mmc did something wrong or maybe the ati mmc filter in DC. Can you send me the log files from the log folder in the Driver Cleaner directory they are .log files. I can then look and also check my mmc filter. Please send them to info@drivercleaner.net this will help me improve the filters and if it is a problem with my filter i will fix that.
I am 100% sure that the ATI filter did not cause it. So i have to check the ATI MCC filter.

ace11 really thanx for reporting that. So if you didn't use DC then there is something else wrong, if you only changed the catalyst driver then the problem is in that direction. I didn't had time to install the new 6.1, but will do that tommorow and do some test to see if i also have it then.

Hi,
I've sent the email with the attached DriverCleaner log. It's weird that it may be the Catalyst's themselves that cause this. I'll keep an eye on this thread and will do a Catalyst report if the consensus seems to be that's what's causing the mp3 mess up. Who knows? Maybe after looking at the logs you'll see something DriverCleaner is removing that might effect this.

Hi, i have the same problem as Eck.
I was sure that ratDVD caused this problem first, but after doing a fresh install tried to play an avi file and went okay, i installed Driver cleaner first to clean the Ati Microsoft drivers, used all ATI filters to clean and after that before installing cat drivers i tried to play an avi file, and bang, the nasty problem again WMP can't play audio. i'll send my DH log to that mail too. Sry for my bad english -_- Last edited by NeoDaemon; Jan 20, 2006 at 08:19 AM. |

I will look into it. It is wierd indeed that some people who didn't use DC also have it. Hope to find something.
[hobo]eclipse i know you didn't point fingers Ok after some investigation i found 1 thing. The ATI TV Wonder filter is not good. It removes 1 thing to much, sorry for that. It will be fixed in the next version. The key that i think causes this is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{DA4E3DA 0-D07D-11d0-BD50-00A0C911CE86}. That is deleted. I am really sorry. I found that the key is also here HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{DA4E3DA0-D07D-11d0-BD50-00A0C911CE86} export that and then change HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\ into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\ and save and import the reg file again. Maybe that will fix it. So just open the reg file with notepad and do a replace. Thanx for the log files that really helps me to find problems.

ace11 1 of the DC Filters delets that key, so i thought that that would cause it, but Rayder tried and it did not help. I will keep looking and keep you all posted on my finds.

It is really wierd. After checking the logs of some of you, i see no problems. The only thing i saw was that registry key. After looking at this i have the feeling that it maybe is not a problem from Driver Cleaner. Looks like something todo with the new MMC or Catalyst drivers. But i will keep looking.
Rayder have you tried uninstalling WMP and then reinstalling? If any of you did not send me the log files then please send them.

What I get is, "The specified module could not be found", in all cases of a file that won't play. I browse useing Firefox 1.5.
The full uninstall/reinstall of WMP10 didn't work btw. Currently running the Cat 6.1's, if that makes any difference. I've been having this issue since the install of the 5.13's though, which coincides with my first use of DCpro 1.3. EDIT: It seems to be MP3, AVI, WMA and WMV's that don't play. That's what I've found so far by clicking around on files in my storage drive. Odd thing....some AVI's play and others don't. EDIT: EDIT: WMV's are the same way, some yes, some no.

the fix
was to go to the "tools" menu of Media Player 10 and then to "Options" and then on the tab folder select "Devices". From there select the "speakers" on the list which will open up another box . In the window "audo device to use:" select a different settting on the list (if there is one). Try not to use the "default" speaker device. This worked for me and "viola, everything worked again! |

Until now i still have no luck. I checked all the log files and compared them to my registry and all looks ok. Can 1 of you do a windows repair and then compare the log file with the registry and see if any of the keys are not from ATI.
I know that HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\CLASSES\CLSID\{DA4E3DA 0-D07D-11d0-BD50-00A0C911CE86} is not ATI but that did not fix it. Any help will help me so if any of you find the solution then please tell me and i can see what if a dc filter causes it and if it does i can fix it then. I will keep looking, but if 1 can do that repair and check it will help.

ronnn,
Yes, as I said, doing a repair install from booting to the XP cd fixed my mp3 problem. It's interesting that mp3 is not the only file format affected. I hadn't tried the others. I suggest setting all virusscanner options to off and setting it not to run at startup. Also set your firewall not to run at startup. Then shutdown your computer and unplug your ethernet card. This is better than disabling your ethernet connection within Windows (what I do when I want to clean boot for stuff), as the XP installer otherwise would activate the connection when it installs the driver but leave the Windows Firewall off as it does retain all software settings for a repair install (but not hardware, as it installs the drivers fresh). So you'd wind up booting after install to an unfirewalled active internet connection! So just unplug the thing and leave device manager alone. Then boot to the Bios so you can put in your XP cd, save the settings (no need to change if you already can boot to cd) and exit the bios. Press the spacebar when prompted to boot to the XP cd, don't press R to go into the recovery console, do press R to repair the current Windows installation. Reinstall the Catalysts right over themselves to get back Smartgart, reboot, set your firewall and virusscanner to the defaults again and shut down to reconnect your ethernet. On reboot go to Windows Update and keep going back after each reboot untill you get everything. All fixed. Except if some of your hardware uses unsigned or you prefer older drivers than XP installs. Then you need to update them. I was lucky this time as all the drivers I was using were signed and the latest, so XP just used them.
