gone before the fall

"Dame you" she cried and hid her face from my eyes.
"You never cared about me" "you told me nothing but lies"

I turned to go and tried not to listen to her cries.
Two years of heartache and misery, and now I am dispised.

I never promised her anythng more than the love that I was willing to give.
I never planned for the future, I was grateful for the chance to live.

I held her in my arms and gave her comfort in her darkest time.
she gathered her strength and her courage and I eased her troubled mind.

Now my path is clear and my time has come to travel again.
She lost a lover today, and sadly I lost another friend.

Promises are wasted on lovers so why make them at all..
when the first cool winds blow I'm gone before the first leaves fall.

reminds me bitterly about the wages of love and war...
