ghostly footfalls
matted grass covers gray flagstones on the forgotten path.
gnarled branches and twisted vines choke the light from the soft meadow floor. silent footfall of spirits long buried and long past who wait for the flowers and the love ones that cannot come anymore. rotten wooden fence collapses slowly and disappears. into the dark green shroud of scrub oak and juniper along the rutted trail. I emerge into the tiny plot of the old homestead cemetary and feel a twinge of fear. the breeze blows past the tumbled and broken gravestones and the withered bushes with leaves so pale. I was not invited and my camera feels so heavy in my shaking hand The west wind seems to push the shadows a little further towards the place where I stand... in the broken window of the homestead house I nearly see the reflection of a man. it isnt me and I have trespassed upon something sacred and I understand.. here lies those that have returned to the earth and I leave them there.....to let them make silent ghostly footfalls in the grass and sand..
