this little guy hatched last night, but mummy chick didn't want anything to do with it (can't tell the sex yet, so I'll call it 'him') and my gf found him half dead and barely moving this morning. but a hot water bottle and a little tlc and he's a lot better now.
that's a standard SD card next to him for scale.
and in case anyone's interested, he's a pure breed Silkie, and should he live, he'll end up looking a little like this.

Golden rule: don't name em until you're sure they're gonna live

we keep a few pure breeds (silkies and barnavelders) as pets mostly (handy for eggs too of course). if this one survives we'll have at least 3 pure breeds to sell at aution later in the year. you'd be suprised the prices these little chicks can fetch

last auction I went to I was edged out bidding on a pair of young chicks (aracunas possibly. might have been silkies, don't really remember) which eventually went for around £90 / 133EUR / $180US.
which is a lot when you consider that sometimes the things are so young that there's no real guarantee that they'll even survive the ride home.
our little guy made it through the night OK anyway, so looking more hopefull for him now.

we thought our little chook might like a friend, so we gave him a teddy.
he's rather taken with it

(I only managed to get a couple snaps of him looking up, I've about a hundred of him with his head burried underneath the thing

well we re-introduced him to his family today, and he seems fine and dandy, so I no longer have a baby chicklet to look after. which I'm strangely sad about. probably time to get myself fixed.
anyway, took a piccy just before we put him outside, think it's cute personally (feisty beggar now btw)
