Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

now it might seem all rubbish, but this pic was interesting me because of the colours etc.
If you have a differing opinion I understand, but what the hey...this technology is only 10 years old really. Here two pics compare at higher from normal res so the differences are interesting to me. I think more than 10 megapixels is excessive for consumer photography but I am getting a full frame sensored camera soon, either a Nikon or a Canon so I shall travel back to Italy and take another shot from the same point just for Sh*ts and giggles.

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

That’s a great pic and although not 1 Megapixel (The image size is 3.5MP), I still agree with your point.

When many people buy a camera, they look at one thing, its Megapixel rating, but ignore what is actually important; Things like CCD size and quality, lens quality, the cameras image processor and the features/handling of the camera is far more important.

My camera on paper is much worse than most compacts these days, as it is "only" rated at 8MP, but with its big lens, and more importantly great handling and feature list, it blows pretty much all cameras in its price range out of the water.

So yeah, Megapixels are not everything, and thanks for sharing that picture too! An excuse to rep you anyway (I have been forgetting to do so for a while! :P)

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

eight is more than enough for some solid creative work, but the megapixel competition between camera makers must be that ever burning quest to create a camera that will deliver just as good res as plain old film. I actually like a little graininess in my BW and my sepia, but I rarely post those as they are a bit to mature for this site.

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

Nice pictures as usual. And I see that there is now a bit of a competition for the most interesting pictures. :-)

I agree. You can get superb images from an 8 megapixel camera. But you gotta have the lens and the proper settings and an artistic eye. The camera is the tool it is not the photographer. Both you fellows seem to have the eye and the knowledge.

The mega pixel war (I believe) plays on the lack of understanding that most consumers have. Therefore the manufacturers play the "My meagpixels are bigger than yours" game to move product. Same as every other industry. (My car has more horse power, better milage, my TV has more pixels, My CPU is faster, My HD is bigger, My GPU has more shaders, etc, etc.) But none of the "Mine is bigger than yours" are a good indicator of the results you may experience with the product.

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

That is precisely why I want a full frame sensor, but I remember my father and my brother showing me how to make a pin hole camera with a Quaker Oats container and we used old 126 film and just guessed at the ISO and exposure time.
It wasnt pretty but it taught me alot about technique.
I think with film it was easier to be creative, but now it seems that digital presents new challenges and perhaps the simpler and less sophisticated cameras are better for consumers like myself, simply because I can exhaust my knowlege and gain more knowlege without fiddling with buttons, etc.
Wont stop me from buying a Mamiya though..LOL
I have lots of old pics my Liz left with me before she went back to the states for chemotherapy and I am now just getting to look at them again.
I have more if you wish me to post them, but its mostly travel in Japan, Europe and America a couple years ago.
I am afraid I was more creative during my romantic period. LOL

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

I always check Heavenly Visions to have a look at your stuff. It is all interesting and very nice. Also, I can learn from it. :-)

I have always had a small interest in photography, but I didn't learn much till I got a DSLR 3 years ago. I still love the Canon rebel XT as it cured all the technical problems I was having capturing my granddaughters image. I hated waiting for the P&S because the moment was gone, before the camera was ready. The DSLR got all the moments before , during and after. And the image stabilized zoom helped as well. I was happy.

I realized within the first few frames that it would be years before I could blame the camera again. :-)

I believe the instant feedback from an SLR has actually allowed me to learn more about photography, particularly light and composition than I ever got from film.

I hope Liz is ok?

Steve

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

I would tend to agree with the learning curve. If you pay attention you can learn a great deal but I often just take off in any direction with my camera's without any forethought and just stop and capture pics when I find them. I wish I had enough discipline to just shoot a series of pics and compare techniques, but I am too impatient of course. Thanx for the remarks, it would be cool to see some pics of Toronto though, I think there are a series of waterfalls there much like in Spokane Washington and that might be a challenge for me one day.

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

Pretty flat around here. But there are a few falls along the Niagra escarpment that are pituresque albeit not very tall. And of course Niagra Falls itself which is always a little awe inspiring. But the awe starts with the noise, long before you see it. :-)

I too am the impatient type, and learn from what I see. So with the SLR, it's instant. ie see the problem and decide immediately how to solve the problem and shoot it again. This approach seems to embed the knowledge instantly. Also, <sacralidge> using auto on the camera makes it pretty easy to take those holiday snaps without burning too many brain cells. Not like I have many to spare :-)

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

Indeed.
I found that Londeners were more tolerant of picture takers like me, as I blend easily in with all the Asians taking the classic shots, but when I try to drive across the fens and take pics of unusual things like target ships or sunsets on the Wash above Kings Lynn, I get some skinny, buck toothed bloke with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth and shaking some sort of obscenty with his fist, on my rear bumper on a bloody B road going nowhere...trying to pass! I have never seen anything like it. When I was a lad I used to fight with these types of chaps living round RAF Bentwaters but East Anglia is repleet with them..LOL.
I guess you have to have patience and look like you know what your doing I suppose..
I have my work cut out for me.
Allan Campbell has some good pics of the seacoast and harbour he used to have squirrelled away somewhere but I have lost the link I think.
I would enjoy pics of Canada. I find Regina boring and unless I am in West Vancouver, its pretty green and flat to me..LOL.

Re: Chapel pic (with 1 megapixel camera)

Yep, I have seen some of Allans pictures. They are nice as well, but I seem to recall a motor cycle getting into the scenic images on occasion. :-)

I also like your taste in aircraft.

Overall, I think what makes a good photographer besides a little skill and equipment is the desire and follow through to go and get the pictures. i.e put yourself in the pictures way. After all, they won't come to you. I am a bit lazy in this respect.

Cheers.

I totally agree, while a great camera helps, you still have to have an eye for a picture, and the enthusiasm to work to get to them.

Although my photography is average at best, I am a keen learner, and am having lots of fun with my camera, meaning I have the impetus to drive myself further to become a better photographer.

I have high standards to live up to here (Thanks to Flastaff and others) and in "Real life" as my workplace is littered with SLR owners and hardcore amateurs, so I know my place and intend on learning from those with far more experience than myself.

Well I am going to see my sister for her birthday (21st at that!) this weekend, so when I return I will have lots of picture of the fair town of Swindon, and many, many pics of her and my nephews. (And her dog Jobe! :P)
