that level of design reached it s zenith in the Hawker Hurricane, but it was a remarkably fast airplane for its day. Ironically, when that airplane reached operational status in the UK, the Russians already had a monoplane fighter in production as well.
The Gloster Gladiator was probably the last gasp for biplanes if you dont count the Fairey Swordfish attacks on the Bismarck, etc.
