Baby Blue Jay
Well today we had a strange visitor; a baby blue jay that cant fly yet. Our neighborhood is full of cats and this poor little unit would have been a quick lunch. We took it and dropped it at the vet to care for.

Re: Baby Blue Jay
Cute baby bird................. I would have raised it myself, but that takes a lot of time.... good you took it to a vet.
Momma was probably somewhere in the area watching........

Re: Baby Blue Jay
its tough to raise them, like squirrels even in the wild very few reach maturity I think.
I love them, like Magpies, they are camp robbers and thieves. They are pretty darn smart though, a diet of worms and bugs would have been ideal, but they have to be fed almost every two hours.

Re: Baby Blue Jay
Most baby birds are about every 2 hours feeding time, and a Jay would eat a lot of different foods. At that age, fledgling, they are fairly easy to raise.... when younger it's not very easy.
Robbers and thieves? Just ask my crow, Erin, about that..... she will deny it and then steal your watch...... lol. She's just two this year and incredibly brilliant. She will bark like one of my dogs and then say "Koa! That's enough"....... She's so sweet though, stays in her cage most of the day with the door wide open, very content. Talks up a storm, plays with the kitties and she even plays catch!I also have a European Starling that is about 14 years old and going blind now. He still talks some but not as much as he used to. They are only supposed to live to 7-8 years.

Re: Baby Blue Jay
where I work, we have tall groves of trees full of Magpies, blackbirds, crows and ravens because we are in East Anglia and we dont have the normal raptors that keep the populations in check. In fact I think we have more pigeons than New York city or London here.
The whole of East Anglia must hae passed thorugh the gut of a pigeon at some point in time. I cannot think of a creature quite like a Jay here but I suppose a Rook would do, they fascinate me.
