Re: Horent in the Garden

I guess this is a wasp, but what the hey.
I was told by my Slovakian friend that if it was a Hornet, I would have seen a threat response of some kind, this guy just went about her business and flew around me.
I think I have seen hornets though, big and brown. They have a sort of twin engined flying bug sound..LOL

Re: Horent in the Garden

Ya thats true found this on wiki :
Quote:
Hornets are the largest eusocial wasps, that reach up to 55 mm (2.2 in) in length. The true hornets make up the genus Vespa, and are distinguished from other vespines by the width of the vertex (part of the head behind the eyes), which is proportionally larger in Vespa; and by the anteriorly rounded gasters (the section of the abdomen behind the wasp waist).

Re: Horent in the Garden

I saw a TV documentary about hornets. I don't remember what type exactly they were, but they killed bees for food. When they attacked a hive they not only killed a few to satisfy their hunger, but they went on and on and slaughtered the entire hive - probably just for fun. And it was a few thousands of bees against a few tens of hornets...

Re: Horent in the Garden

Christ, we had hornets like that in Japan, in Hokkaido, I think I remember that, you would find dead hives, the bees have no natural defense, even if the Hornet was overwhelmed..
whoa..
and I thought African bees were bad...We now have African American bees to contend with in Arizona and other southern states.
