It's a bit rough at times. the job is physically exhausting working up to 18 hours a day sometimes at all hours of the night and day. Money is great and the people i work with on the boat are great guys. All in all I wouldn't trade it for the world.

Many many years ago, I nearly missed ships movement. My car was delayed on the freeway to my homeport. I arrived just in time to see the lines being cast off and the ship being pushed and pulled away from our pier. I ran with my sea bags down past the line crew and saw a small tug bringing the stern around. The Tug was called the Sea Robin and one of the hands onboard looked up from the afterdeck and screamed at me to jump.
I took a running leap and landed onto the steel deck and rolled against the winch.
I can recall the looks on the tug crewmans face when he motioned for me to jump and I forever grateful for his assistance, otherwise I would have been sent to the holding company in port and held for captains mast.
My ships executive officer wanted to write me up, but my Divisional commander said that I did my best, so they let me off with a stern warning and extra duty inport in Vancouver BC.
I will never knock a tug crew again, even though the shrill of whistles and the blat and blair of horns will deafen you if your on the main deck, it is all part of hard work that tugs do, in spite of the skippers and harbour masters that can make life hard.

It was my first month onboard the USS MISSOURI and we were headed North to Oregan and Vancouver to show the flag. If I didnt make that twenty foot jump from the pier to Sea Robin my career would have been sunk, no pun intended.
I didnt go aboard the USS Missouri till we passed the mole and the Harbor Master used the Jacobs ladder to leave the ship and I used it to board the ship (with permission).
