Some Shots Around Campus
I don't think this shot was worth lying on the ground for:



The overrated and typical flower shot:

I really do wish I had a better lens because I've noticed that low light shots are really blurry with the 18-55mm. On the bright side, I've already been hired by the school newspaper to take shots, so hopefully after the first paycheck I can get a 50mm f1/8 lens.

No words of wisdom here, but I love the one with the ghost of the eternal student, it reminded me of my faculty!

You seem to notice very different things that could be interesting. Also, you caught a very good moment with the girl on the swing. Where I think you might improve is composition (I said I wouldn't, but it looks like I am going to pretend to be smart), I feel that some shots might benefit from moving the main subject away from the dead center (the eye, the swinging girl, the emergency phone). The very basic way to achieve good results is to imagine the screen of the camera to be divided into thirds, both horizontally and vertically (some cams have the option to show such grid while shooting) and to place the main objects along those lines.

Also, it's good watch the "weight" distribution, place "heavier" objects closer to the middle (but not dead center) and "lighter" ones further to the sides like you would if you tried to get objects of different weight balanced on a seesaw. Sorry if I'm telling you stuff you already know.

The last two photos are much better in these two respects than most of the others.

EDIT: I just did a quick crop of the photo with the swinging girl to show you what I mean. I don't consider myself someone who knows too much about photography, but I kind of like it better this way.

I cropped the telephone pole because the picture I took had too much background. I can recrop it and post it in a bit.

I like what you've got so far mate, If they haven't been shopped already you've got some great contrast going on there. Maybe you could try getting a shot of the "business end" of an instrument, IE. A Macro of the cello player doing his thing (low angles looking up the strings work well). I've experimented a little bit with guitar photography, If you can get the guitarist to hold the pick just the right way you've got a slick shot

You're doing great so far, Try taking a few shots just as the sun's beginning to set.
Get the shadows just right you'll blow people away

I wish there were fewer buildings here, because it's really hard to get the right shadows at sunset. That one was taken when I was rushing back to the dorms, so I didn't do any scouting before snapping away.

Don't forget at f/1.8 you'll have a really shallow depth of field, sometimes that's what you want, but other times it's best to widen the DOF and just use a longer shutter and a higher ISO - a remote shutter release really helps with preventing blur from the vibration of actually pressing the shutter release on the camera

also the 450D has a couple of custom function options that might interest you - "long exposure noise reduction" and "high ISO noise reduction" - the pretty much do what their name suggests, but will "soften" the image, so maybe take a few shots with each CF on/off and compare later, see if the trade-off is worth it

I plan to do a lot of portraits, and that's why I really want the 50. As for the remote shutter, I don't really need it as I use the timer instead. It's not as convenient, but it still is effective.

I read about those features by the way, but I never looked into the camera enough to see how to turn them on. I'll look for them the next time I do some high ISO shots.

Well, if you can, you should come visit me some time! I love to physically meet people I've only met online (Granted they're not murderers or rapists). And Lawton is about an hour away from Norman, so it isn't that far.

The only reason I don't take 100 shots at a time is because I'm impatient. If my shot isn't that good, I just say, "Screw it, Photoshop was invented for a reason." I haven't been heavily shopping any of my pictures simply because I don't see a need for it. This camera is exponentially better than my point and shoot, so my standards for a good shot are kind of low.

By the way, if anyone wants the full resolution versions of any of my shots, let me know and I'll upload them. I didn't put them here because loading more than 10 12MP images is really annoying, even for people with broadband connections.
