Vikings had a similar wood stitching method.... It wasn't vertical though and not only for boats. Also the earliest "books" were two wooden planks, stitched together and held flattened earlier scrolls to preserve them.

Looks like you're putting that new camera of yours to good use, great pics, I've been in Egypt (Cairo) before when connecting flights through the airport but never got the chance to see the Pyramids, will hopefully do so someday.
