Night butterfly

Night butterfly taken with flash. Handheld, I need to get myself a tripod. The background is oversaturated but there's not much I could do if I wanted to get the butterfly in full brightness. I was using the zoom because if I get too close with the built-in flash, the lense will cast a shadow. What do people do to take nightime macro pictures? Separate flash? Tripod and long exposure?
