St. Clair tree (ghost tree)
![]() the boughs of this tree once served as an impromptu site for lynchings and hangings during the turn of the last century and stands as a reminder of the ghost town of St Clair Nevada, no one will cut it down for fear it is haunted, even at night the trunk and branchs glow in the moonlight like the bleached bones of the dead that once littered the ground beneath it. It was once said that mandrake root grew beneath it, but now it stands as a silent reminder of desperate times during the goldrush days.

Nice pic, but I would love to see some closer shots. Maybe from you leaning down and shooting the branches in a 45 degree angle.

I wish I could imagine with some clarity the days when men came here to tame the land, they tamed the waters, build houses to weather storms and blowing sands, deep canals to move the water back over anchient shorelines, and plowed under the graves of indians they forced into the mountians to starve and die....They conquered much and built as much that did not linger...
but their legacy is striking...row upon row of cotton wood and highways made of plank wood, and desert playa littered with discarded hopes, dreams and graves of loved ones.. what remains..but the skeletons of homes, dead trees, and rutted roads that wander away into the blowing dunes and succumb to time. Man ironically could not conquer himself, and the meek returned here to scrape what they can from the poor soils, and slowly, as surely as the sun sets day by day...the sands blow back into the valley and choke the canals...
