this is the shore of soda lake, a maar that blew up beneath the crust of alluvial plain less than 50,000 years ago as a geyser that eventually collapsed into a pit of molten rock and water and exploded from the bottom of the anchient prehistoric lake here. Technically a volcano the rock beneath the lake is still hot and the waters are very warm, and rich with minerals. a smaller lake exists nearby formed at the same time. Nevada was and is geologically active today, with earthquakes and tectonic activity continually remelting continental crust beneath the Basin and Range region of the Southwest.
