Topower PowerBird 1100W PSU Review @ DH

Read The Review Here
____________________________

Today we will have a look at their latest PowerBird 1100W PSU, a high performance modular unit. The PowerBird 1100W is designed to compete in the most demanding category of the computer industry market and appeal to the most hardcore of enthusiasts. The big question remains however, is it able to compete with other high end offerings such as the Corsair HX1000W?

Re: Topower PowerBird 1100W PSU Review @ DH

Looks decent and nice review but I noted right away from the specs what was noted in the conclusion ... too many 12V power rails. Perhaps 4 with maybe 30 Amps for the PCI-E rails?

Just as a note and I doubt it has any effect on performance either but the NZXT PP-800 PSU I reviewed also has the primary on the left side.

Re: Topower PowerBird 1100W PSU Review @ DH

Stupid rules!
To comply fully with the specifications, there is a 20A limit, so big PSUs need a stupid number of rails
Power Supplies 101: A comprehensive guide Motherboards.org
http://www.formfactors.org/developer...20Ratified.pdf
Particularly:
Quote:
3.2.4. Power Limit / Hazardous Energy Levels
Under normal or overload conditions, no output shall continuously provide 240 VA under
any conditions of load including output short circuit, per the requirement of UL 1950/CSA
950 / EN 60950/IEC 950.
Didn't notice a rail limit test, sometimes they say "x rails of 20A" but set the per rail OCP considerably higher, as in general, most multi-rail supplies are only split limited, and not actually split rail (though at the highest powers, you can find split rails, as it is more convenient to repeat a medium power circuit twice than to design one huge monster).

How about staying with 6 rails but increasing their output to 25-30A instead?

True enough, there are several specifications and standards which are not only weird to the end user but bad for the overall performance of the products as well. Many companies don't follow the 240VA per line limit standard though. Almost no PSU which has 1-2 12V rails or grand PSUs with a >900W output do.

If I'm not mistaken the 240VA-per-line limit is an ATX 2.0 standard. I think they removed it later or it's not included in the EPS standard.

Matth and Grace thanks for the replies and yes there always rules some of us agree or disagree with. As for video card manufacturers they have already thought ahead by including 2 x PCI-E power sockets like my HD4870 so 12 x 20 really doesn't matter in that case. But if you are running more and not sure what the GTX295 is going to draw but I bet it's not gonna be a lightweight.
