SSD Roundup March 09

Read The Review Here

Today we have three such devices on our test bench from Intel, Patriot and Super Talent. Each has a different capacity and cost but all will be placed through a selection of synthetic and real world tests to establish which drive is ideal for consumer’s first leap into the SSD market.

Re: SSD Roundup March 09

Great review Stu and that Intel SSD sure posts some impressive numbers for being included in the i7 review kit. I didn't get one with my E6550 lol

SSD's I will be getting into this spring I think solid state devices just make sense. In car audio the new Pioneer AVIC Nav/DVD units are already coming with a 30G SSD drive built it.

Re: SSD Roundup March 09

I don't know about the reliability yet. For now, I'm still sticking to conventional hard drives. Although I am really impressed about the speed.

The Patriot drive seems like a good buy for your primary OS drive. Nice review. I'm beginning to like the SDDs more and more.

Re: SSD Roundup March 09

Shame OCZ Apex is missing, they should be crazy fast, but still not that expensive.

Take 2 Patriot Warp V2's and RAID them with a 256k stripe size and there you have Apex. The drive really is a flop. OCZ's Vertex is a huge improvement.

Why is it a flop? I know it's basically a raided solution, but it's fast and good priced.

Because it still uses the poor Jmicron controller. Its only fast for throughput and access time. Under high input/outputs per second is struggles and will stutter. Random read/writes are a whole lot more important than throughput.

Re: SSD Roundup March 09

Are you sure about that? From what I've seen they are using not one, but TWO controllers and an updated version of the Jmicron controller, where these problems should begpne.

Re: SSD Roundup March 09

Yes they are using two very sure it still uses the same Jmicron controllers. There isn't an updated version of it yet. If you want an OCZ drive, Vertex is where it is at. Almost a competitor to the Intel drive.
