Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

Asus Eee PC 1000HE Review
________________________

The Eee PC 1000HE is one of the latest laptops in Asus’s ever expanding line of superportable notebooks, more commonly known as netbooks. What differentiates this offering from many of their other netbooks is the 6 cell battery included as standard with the machine… it is the real selling point for this model and purportedly offers up to 9.5 hours of battery life. We’ll find out later in whether the machine can come close to these impressive claims.

Re: Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

I like how it looks, more or less. The keyboard looks like a spectrum home computer or is it just me?
There are two things I would like to finaly see in a netbook. One is better performance with a dual core cpu and something more powerful in the graphics department. It's been like a year and a half since netbooks arrived and they still have the same system inside them, that is pathetic for computers. The other thing is a move away from the stupid stupid 1024x600 resolution. Damn it, move to at least 1024x768!
Anyway, as far as current netbooks go, this looks like a winner at a good price.

Good review.

Re: Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

Agreed on all counts, BlueMak. There's really a place for something better. Sony got it right with the size and screen on the P series, but screwed on the CPU, and graphics are the usual crap. I'll happily pay about $1000 for something like the P series but with a dual core Atom and Ion platform (or something equivalent). (Well, okay, I'll be happier to pay less than $1000, but I think I'll be willing to pay that.)

Re: Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

As for the battery, for what I've used my subnotebook 2 hours were usually enough for me. I can plug into the mains for most of the time I'm not on the road. Granted, when I went to school and university nobody had laptops for class, so I guess a longer battery life can come in handy in these situations.

Anyway, very long battery life isn't a great selling point for me.

Re: Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

Hey ET3D, just to address your second post I can see why for you it isn't a great selling point but for the majority of people I think battery life in these is of utmost importance. If you're travelling any sort of distance, even if you have access to the mains if you're constantly moving it can be a pain/inconvenience to constantly be plugging yourself in.... even if you only use the machine for short spurts its nice just to know that you can use it throughout the day for a whole day and never be short on battery life. Additionally if you're somewhere like a plane you have to have a certain adaptor (thats if the plain even allows you power access)...... There's countless reasons I could go into but basically battery life is still a huge concern for many people with these ultraportables.

On what some of the other people said I COMPLETELY agree with you, I am still waiting for the perfect notebook myself.... 768 vertical resolution, draft-n, 3g, SSD, decent keyboard, LED backlit screen, stylish chassis........ still waiting.

Sony P series has actually all of those. CPU is still the atom mind you. (and the cost is a lot more!)

Yeah true, bluetooth mouse is a must have though from the looks of things.

They are beautiful machines though and have all the features I could want. Hefty price tag with sony though but it looks worthit.

Great review Nathan and not a bad looking product overall. The battery life and the keyboard are key features for me ... I can't use small keyboards.

Nothing is ever perfect and it does have a few cons like the resolution

Re: Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

I really like this netbook.

I have one of the older ones from Asus, but overall it is the same internals.

I like the new keyboard and the overall look I think is great. I think you can't really expect much more for a computer under $400!

I think it is just insane for anyone to buy one of these netbooks that cost over $400. They are just not worth it for the amount of power you get. Any more and you should spend the little more and get a 13" notebook.

Maybe my standards are lower, but I am thinking this is about the best you are going to get for under $400.

Seriously though, I think people need to appreciate that everyone wants and will buy something different when they go out to buy a computer. some people (like yourself), want the best value for money and won't mind putting up with a few design decisions or possible issues if they are getting the lowest possible price. Others (like myself) would rather spend more and get something a little nicer, such as the Sony P series I mentioned earlier (higher res LED screen, better keyboard etc).

I have nothing against the Asus EEE, I gave an award to one I reviewed last year, I just have some issues with the screen resolution which I find hard to deal with in a working environment. Fine for email or simple browsing, but I don't often "just" do that, even on the move.

Yes would be lovely, but heat is always the issue, the P series is passively cooled, it is tiny. I am hoping some manufacturer cracks the cooling for a dual core in those tiny chassis. Even apple have had issues with the 1.6ghz/1.8ghz Dual core in the air and that has a wider footprint and uses the aluminium as a giant heatsink.

Re: Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

Yeah, heat is the main issue I guess.
Perhaps they should try inserting/holding the CPU in a slot or case that is somehow helping with the cooling of it. I guess that would require either increasing the size of the netbooks or changing the way motherboards are, you might need to plug in with a cable the cpu case to the mainboard instead of directly inserting the cpu to the mainboard. That could help with the size issue a bit since you could place the CPU case in another part of the computer, as you could with a hard drive or other component.
(with my limited knowledge) as it is now it feels like instead of designing something new, they just make a similar to desktop pc motherboards, only smaller.

Re: Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

Heat may have something to do with it, in particular with the tiny P series, but it should definitely be possible to do something better. In fact, even much higher priced subnotebooks (whose price is typically ~$2000), while they do come with a core duo CPU, have integrated Intel graphics. They also show that it's possible to cram a decent CPU and better spec into the same size / weight factor. I'm sure that some of the price is due to that, but it's probably not a huge problem to get a decent spec at this form factor for $1000 and not $2000.

Some of it.

Where I'm willing to accept the 1024x600 resolution, slow CPU and bad graphics is something like the UMID M1. That has real appeal for me. I had a Psion Series 5mx some years back, and liked it quiet a bit. That's about the same weight (even a bit less; it's 315 grams), and it's a full PC. Weak as it may be, that makes me drool.

Re: Asus Eee PC 1000HE @ DH

I'm really looking forward to next week. I'm supposed to be getting an MSI X320 (original name was the U300), which has got a sceen size of 13.4" (13.3"?) with a rez of 1366x768, almost as thin as a Macbook Air (6mm, while the Air is 4mm I think), 2.9 pounds, VGA out, 2GB of memory, 250GB SATA HD, Vista Basic, and runs an Atom Z530 (1.66Ghz).

I might also get an MSI X340 too (or one or the other.. not sure). Same size, but that one runs an Intel ULV Core 2 Solo (edit: 1.4Ghz, 3MB L2 cache), 320GB SATA HD, runs the GS45 chipset, so while it'll come with 2GB of RAM it's capable of going up to 4GB, has Intels GMA4500HD graphics, and HDMI out along with the rest of the X320s specs.

Ah... the old clock rate catch. The Z530 Atom only has 512k cache, an FSB of 533mhz, while the Core 2 Solo, the SU3500, has 3MB cache, and an FSB of 800Mhz. I would assume the Core 2 Solo would trump the Atom, but I've yet to see side by side comparisons.

And a correction, the Core 2 Solo used in the X340 is 1.4Ghz. Mind you that spec isn't solid as my supplier doesn't have much info on exactly what Core 2 Solo is being used. There is also a Celeron M ULV version of the X340 coming, so I'm not sure which they are going to have.

Interesting fact: the Z530 Atom uses 2 watts, while the SU3500 Core 2 Solo uses 5.5 watts. The chipset that is used with the Atom only uses 4.3 watts, while the GS45 chipset pulls 20 watts. Already you can see that the X320 uses 16.8 watts less power than the X340.

Well then the X340 sounds far better if you want performance.

Most of the difference is the chipset, then. Would an NVIDIA chipset have worked out better?

Guess we'll find that out when Ion comes out. In total an Nvidia Ion based Atom computer can use from 20 to 30 watts from what I've read. How much of that is being eaten by just the chipset, not too sure, but I've read that the Ion platform will use, overall, less than that for systems based on the 945, and still be able to play Blu Ray movies, or any movies at 1080p with no problem.

I watched a youtube video earlier that showed the platform (ion) consuming about 7-8W (1.5 of which by the system and the rest by the monitor) while playing 1080p video and having some other applications open, that with a dual core cpu. If that is accurate or marketing BS I don't know.

I'm definitely waiting for that Ion platform netbooks (or notebooks). A dual core Atom with an NVIDIA GPU would certainly be a step up. Now all they need is to up the 1024x600 resolution, and I'd certainly be in line to buy one (especially now that I'm leaving the ranks of the unemployed).

From what I've seen the problem in calculating the power drain is that the preview ION systems don't have a PSU, but rather run off a 12v power brick. I think it was Toms Hardware that did a preview that showed what it pulls.

Edit: I found the article that Toms Hardware did, and readings from the outlet were 15w idle, 25w peak.

Honestly, if this performs as good as they say it does I'll be dumping my Eee Box the day it hits (probably make it my accounting/pos machine). So far Acers AspireRevo is looking pretty good for end of May/June. Cheap too. As for netbooks, I haven't seen any actual pictures of ones based on the Ion. Kinda odd to be honest.
