DH Folding@Home Competition

Our regulars will know that DH'ers fold under the same team as AMD/ATI. Today AMD are offering an extremely rare collectors edition X800 card, one of a mere 5 signed by Dave Orton himself. Driver Heaven is also giving away a lovely DH bag from our forthcoming merchandise range. So we will have two winners.

To enter it is simple. you just need to follow the instructions in this thread in our folding forum and in a few months time we will pick the winners randomly from the folding table. Please note YOU MUST put a DH tag in front of your name so something like DH-Zardon or [DH]Zardon to make yourself recognisable to us when we come to pick the winner.

Obviously the fact its a competition is just to help promote this as it is for an extremely good cause so we hope regular DHers will continue to stick with it even when the competition is over. It is important we use those idle cycles for something positive.

Also note with the release of the Playstation 3, you can now fold via it if you are lucky enough to own one, and the good news is, the PS3 cell processor kicks ass with folding, its around half the speed of a high end ATI card ! and considerably faster than even the most powerful Conroe processors.

What about those who have already been registered are they still eligible even though most of them aren't even folding anymore?

Well unless they start folding again no. We want active folders to help this great cause. If anyone for Dh is currently folding thats fine, you dont need to make another account, just continue.

Also please note this isnt a competition on the units you fold. its open to everyone worldwide regardless of hardware. So that guy who folds for a week on a X1900 wont get any favouritism over the guy who folds on his laptop for 2 months. Its just all about commitment.

And Z, if I may....

We hope you aren't going to join the folding team just for the contest. We (Zardon and myself) really do want to contribute to this great scientific cause, and in fact are hoping everyone that signs up will continue to fold long after the contest is over. To my dismay the last one we had, had over 50 people sign up for the team, but at last check only 5-6 of them are still actively folding.

Doing that 24/7 and GPU client has around 8 to 10 hours per day

[EDIT] I've been doing this since the first competition. And I will continue if I win or not! Didn't know anything about F@H before the competition....

Indeed, it is very satisfying to know that you will serve a great and important cause in helping science move forward in foundational knowledge at Stanford - understanding how proteins act and react with the molecules that make up cells, viruses, and bacteria. Hopefully this research will lead toward finding cures and treatments for many diseases - including cancers.

The daily facts posted at the site are interesting too!

Yes as terry says, the competition is just our way of getting people into it - in an ideal world we wouldnt really need this, all the DH regulars would be in there already.

They are great prizes but we hope you all join in to help out and then stay. Im sure a lot of you have inactive machines sitting in a corner on 24/7 as a server or downloading machine. If you put this small app on, it only takes some inactive cycles, it wont kill a machine by overloading it. im running a laptop 24/7 and my PS3 when im in the house and not using it.

If anyone doesnt understand what folding is, please follow the thread link in the first post, its really not rocket science, so don't be put off by the fact you might not have tried it before.

To all those who are still folding and giving DH a good showing in there, thank you !

I think so if you have dual core... I have gpu running and it uses lot's of my cpu ... around 90% of it

I just joined the team under [DH]Tril. I'v been folding for almost a year for another team on another forum but I decided to switch to here since I'm much more often here.

The cpu client is set at 95% of the cpu usage since then and it does not give any noticeable performance hit.

You can. Although I haven't tried the SMP client to see if it can be run at the same time with the GPU client. Don't see why it shouldn't work though.

It works fine in both situations with the CPU client, but it's the SMP client I'm not too sure about. As to the high CPU load you're getting with the GPU client, it only looks that way. Here's the quote from F@H about that:

"Client looks like it is using lots of CPU time: Graphics drivers must poll the GPU to see if it is done. This will look like a lot of CPU time being used, but nothing is really being done, so one can run other relatively CPU heavy code at the same time. However, we do not recommend running multiple FAH clients, as this can significantly slow down the GPU client. A good rule of thumb: leave at least 25% of the CPU time available for the GPU client."

Mind you running a CPU client and a GPU client does work. It just takes a little adjusting to get them working where they aren't fighting for resources.

i'm still running into issues attempting to get the dual GPU client to fire up and run, and even with crossfire disabled, the GPU client seems to crash occasionally.... kinda weird... happens under both xp and vista.. on both this new intel rig and the old amd... one thing that's kinda odd.

Both cards, have a very very high pitched whistle/wine like the frequencies are actually making audioable noise. I only recently noticed this with the intel rig, it's REALLY loud.
