Sneak peak at forthcoming MSI P35 Platinum mobo

MSI at the end of the month are releasing a new motherboard based on the forthcoming P35 intel chipset.

They have allowed us to post a little taster video showing the board design however we aren't allowed to detail anything else right now!

To view the video, follow this thread from the front page into our forum!

I do hope that those heat pipes won't get too hot to melt insulation from cables. That 12V 8-pin connector is really in dangerous place from my point of view. I would be happy if MSI would move it some where else. Anyway can't wait to see the review.

The heat pipes are sick
but this obviously points to the fact that the P35 is a hot running chipset
so overclocking may be hampered

any idea how many sata/usb ports the ICH9 southbridges provide?

i know you guys are busy, but would it be possibe to get an overview of the 'bearlake' chipset & its various iterations before the review?
of course i understand you not wanting to repeat yourselves, just having a hard time finding anyhthing really definitive on this chipset.

The NDA does expire on May 9th correct? Hopefully their P35 'lollercoaster' board will OC better than their other LGA775 offerings.

EDIT: referring to MSI boards.

Bout time someone came up with a more AREA use for chipset heatsinks and thought 3 demensionally.

the only issue i foressee is that users with massive heatsinks aren't going to be jumping and happy when they try to install either the heatsink (to big) or can't get there hands in there to push the clips down into place.

I wish more manufacturers would go the non silly heatpipe route like DFI. Just use a simple heatsink and fan if possible.

A simple heatsink and fan would be nice for oem or manufacturer or typical users (non overclockers or moders for that matter, or those unlikely to load the system to the max with hardware and other things).

But this MSI board would be something that i would like.

Oh no I hate that... Heatsink if possible but for the love of god, destroy those 40-60mm fans forever!

sorry i meant a small fan if needed. Those silly heatpipes are useless. DFI has never used any silly heatpipes that connect all the chips + mosfets and they generally have the best overclocking boards out there. I actually wish manufacturers would provide mobo's without any heatsinks, just so i could use my own. And not have to cut all the heatpipes like i do on my motherboards because it is impossible to remove them otherwise....

Gigabyte and Asus will also have plenty of heatpipes cooled and heatsinks on their new Intel chipset boards if they releases the retail version of the board that are having same design as the review version i've seen on the internet.

The white power-plug at the top left seems a bit "crammed" with those pipes running almost on top of it.

DFI haven't made a new board in a long time and I'm sure with the newer boards, which make way more heat than the old ones, they'd either go for the accursed fan + haetskink or silent heatpipe mode... There's a reason Mobo companies are spending more on heatpipes, it ain't just for show

Personally silence is important for me, and I love my fanless mobo (Though I don't have heatpipes )

DFI hasn't made a new board in a long time? How about their P965, n680i, and RD600 boards all released in the last 4 months. All of which don't have excessive heatpipes going everywhere, and all of which will do 500FSB on stock cooling. Heatpipes are a good idea, but most motherboard manufactureres use very cheap heatpipes that don't even use a wick inside the pipe. So yes, the heatpipes are mostly for show . Most people think more heatpipes = better.

Nothing wrong with good heatpipe design, if it is handled and designed correctly. I would much rather have a good heatpipe design with the option of mounting my own 120mm fan on a swinging arm over the mobo than be stuck out of the box with some crap ass 40-60mm fan combo which is loud and pushes no CFM over the important parts. Then they fail in 6 months time leaving you with no fan and a crap tiny heatsink design.

Some heatpipe designs might suck, however equally so I have yet to see a good fan included with a motherboard.

Almost all die hard overclockers have internal fans even those guys who run 500fsb+ on boards would have some additional cooling over the mofsets. Those who don't quite often end up with dead boards months down the line.

I also wouldn't rate DFI as the "benchmark" for the "fan is better principal". A colleague of mine works in the industry and their fail rate in the last year has been appalling.

i wud really like to see DFI's version of the P35 and X38
but as usual they'll always be late to the party
they just released their P965 infinity and nforce 680i motherboard recently
that is long after the competition
the boards may very well be better, but they really ought to get them out with the competition

I hope these boards and chipset are worth the wait. I have everything I need for my new system minus the motherboard and video card. I am waiting to see which video card is best worth my money and the mobo chipset that goes best with it (Nvidia for Nvidia or Intel for ATI). My patience is growing thin.

Interesting. It seems some places are actually selling these boards now. Too bad I do not live in the UK.

Ya I've seen a couple of people buy retail boards on different forums. Don't know how those places haven't gotten in to trouble.

Wow really all those boards? I haven't even had a wiff of em... Not even seen a pic or review anywhere. Strange, I'm usually quite up to date on these sorta things.

Anyways, DFI have never used heatpipes but all the premium boards from all the major successful companies (looking at Asus, Gigabyte, Abit/MSI here), all those super heatpipe solutions, from what I know and have seen, are a godsend

Asus P5K's look pretty good too so far. Either the DQ6 or the P5K will be choice, really just matter whatever is available first.

Also from what I heard from a local distributor here in Iceland the Gigabyte's P35 will sport a whopping 6yr warranty.

With the frequency Intel change their chipsets it will be replaced in 6 months max anyway.

the board doesn't look that impressive IMO. my opinion on that is because of the heat pipe design.

now, why is everybody anticipating this board again? is it only because of the ICH9 southbridge?
