Laptop Hard disk drive compatibility
I have a Compaq Presario 2500 notebook. My 40Gb hard disk drive self destructed one week out of warranty. Brand new drives are very expensive here in Australia for Laptops - $550au.
I have an opportunity to purchase a brand new 40Gb Fujitsu Notebook HDD. Model No: MHV2040AT for $98au. The seller says that this Fujitsu Notebook HDD should work in most LAPTOPS including mine. The only problem as I see it is that my existing non working Hard disk drive is an ATA-100 IDE. The Fujitsu is ATA-6 with the following specs - Average seek time - 12.0 ms Doubles industry-standard load/unload cycles to 600,000 Industry's highest operating shock of 300Gs and non-operating shock of 1,000Gs Read Head - GMR (Giant magnetoresistive heads) My question is - Will this Hard disc drive be compatible with my laptop. ATA-100 is just another description for ATA-6. The drive is compatible, but it is only a 4200 rpm drive. If you have a chance go for a 5400 rpm drive. They are noticeably faster.
ATA interface explained on Wikipedia Regards, Partizan
